Behind-The-Scenes of a Professional Headshot Session

A professional headshot can be your ultimate networking tool, leaving a powerful first impression on potential clients, employers, and colleagues. Whether it’s for LinkedIn, a company website, or a speaking engagement, the quality of your headshot says a lot about you. But what really goes on behind the scenes of a professional headshot session? Here, I’ll walk you through the five essential steps that help bring out your best, from the initial consultation to post-processing.

1. Consultation: Setting the Foundation

Every successful professional headshot begins with a thorough consultation, typically over Zoom. During this first step, I’ll take the time to understand your specific needs and the purpose of your headshot. Are you looking for an image for your company’s website, your LinkedIn profile, or perhaps to market yourself as a speaker? By discussing where your professional headshot will be used, we can customize the look, background, and feel to match your goals.

In addition to determining the purpose, we’ll also cover essential details, such as:

  • Wardrobe: I’ll guide you on attire choices that enhance your appearance on camera and fit your brand. In fact, I provide a “What to Wear” guide with recommendations on colors, fits, and styles that work best for headshots.
  • Hair and Makeup: Some clients prefer a polished look for their professional headshots, so I’ll also ask if you’d like to include hair and makeup services. For higher-end sessions, this can be a game-changer, helping you look and feel your best.
  • Background and Location: If we’re aiming for a more formal corporate look, a studio setup might be ideal. For others who want a warmer, more approachable vibe, an outdoor background could work well.

The consultation ensures we’re on the same page about every detail so that your session day flows smoothly.

Tip: If you’re interested in a more comprehensive branding session, we can discuss that as well. Branding sessions go beyond a headshot, providing a wider variety of images for your website, social media, and other marketing needs.

2. Choosing the Right Type of Session

Not everyone’s needs are the same, so I offer several session types to cater to different goals and schedules. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Express Session: This quick, 15-minute session delivers a single professional headshot, ideal for those looking to update their profile with minimal fuss. Wardrobe changes aren’t included, and consultations are optional, making this a great option for clients needing a fast, high-quality update.
  • Executive Session: For clients seeking a more refined look, this session offers two different looks with three final images. It includes hair and makeup, ensuring that your professional headshots capture you at your most polished. For this session, we’ll have a full consultation to discuss wardrobe, makeup, and overall goals.
  • Corporate Sessions: Designed for companies who need consistent headshots for multiple team members, corporate sessions are customized based on location, wardrobe, and backgrounds that suit the company’s brand. We’ll cover these details via email or a dedicated consultation.

3. Setting Up: Preparation Makes Perfect

When it’s time for the session, I make sure everything is ready to create the ideal atmosphere. For corporate sessions, I arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled time to set up equipment, ensuring the lighting and backdrop meet the highest standards for a professional headshot. Generally, an 8×10 ft clear space is required, but more room can provide even better flexibility for lighting and camera angles. This setup is essential to create a relaxed, professional environment that allows you to focus solely on bringing your best self to the camera.

4. The Session: Guiding You to Look Your Best

Many people worry about posing, but during your professional headshot session, I’ll guide you every step of the way. I offer clear, simple instructions for each pose, ensuring your body language looks natural and confident. I pay close attention to every detail, from the tilt of your chin to the angle of your shoulders.

Posing for a professional headshot can sometimes feel a bit awkward, but trust the process! Often, the poses that feel unusual to clients translate into powerful, engaging photos on camera. I also help you achieve the right expression because a great headshot isn’t just about looking professional—it’s about making a warm, inviting connection. Your expression can set the tone for a headshot that potential clients, employers, or colleagues will connect with immediately.

5. Post-Processing: The Finishing Touch

After the session, I handle all post-processing to deliver a professional headshot that truly shines. My editing process enhances your best features while maintaining a natural look. I prioritize a clean, polished result without over-editing, ensuring that your final headshots are both flattering and true to you.

Typically, I deliver the final images in a format optimized for web use, making it easy for you to upload them directly to LinkedIn, your website, or any other platform where a high-quality professional headshot is essential.

Why a Professional Headshot Matters

A professional headshot is an invaluable asset in today’s digital age. It’s often your first chance to make a connection, show your personality, and establish credibility. Whether it’s through a LinkedIn profile picture or a team photo on a company website, the right headshot speaks volumes. Working with a photographer who understands the nuances of lighting, posing, and expression will help ensure that your headshot captures your professionalism, confidence, and approachability.

With a range of session options, I’m here to provide you with a seamless, enjoyable experience that delivers results. Let’s get started on creating a professional headshot that represents you at your very best!

Here’s why 👇🏻

Most people wait for the “perfect” moment—when they’ve lost a few pounds, changed their hair, or finally feel more confident. But here’s the truth: there will always be something you’re waiting on.

Your headshot isn’t about some future version of you—it’s about showing up confidently in the season you’re in today. Because this version of you? The one leading your team, meeting clients, building your business—that’s the version people want to connect with.

When your photo feels authentic and current, it builds instant trust. Outdated or staged images can actually do the opposite, making it harder for people to recognize the real you.

So don’t wait for “someday.” The right time to show up as your best self is always now.

🚫 Let’s talk wardrobe no-nos for headshots.

I want you to look polished, confident, and distraction-free in your photos—and sometimes that means skipping certain outfit choices.

For men:

❌ No undershirts peeking through

❌ If you’re wearing a tie, make sure your shirt buttons all the way up

❌ If it doesn’t, we’re ditching the tie

For women:

❌ Skip the sleeveless tops—your arms will compete with your face for attention

✅ A sleeve (even short) helps keep the focus where it belongs—on YOU

The goal? A clean, intentional look that draws people in and keeps their attention right where it should be—your face.

📸 Save this before your session so you can show up ready and confident.

Let's talk... ⬇️

If your headshot isn’t working on your website, LinkedIn, or social media...

👉🏻 it’s probably not the image.

👉🏻 it’s the crop.

Yep, even the most beautiful photo can fall flat if it’s not framed for the platform it’s on.

Here are 3 common cropping mistakes I see all the time (and how to fix them):

1️⃣ Too Close – When there’s no breathing room, the image feels cramped and overly intense.

2️⃣ Too Far – If we can’t clearly see your face, we lose the connection instantly.

3️⃣ Wrong Shape for the Platform – That rectangle you uploaded to LinkedIn? It just became a circle... and cut off half your head.

✨ The fix? Intentional cropping before you upload—so your headshot looks polished, professional, and approachable everywhere.

Do you wear glasses all the time? Then they should absolutely be in your headshot.

Because here’s the thing—your headshot should look like you.

If you wear them only sometimes, it’s up to you. But if they’re part of your everyday look, don’t leave them out just because you’re worried about glare.

There are plenty of ways I can minimize reflection—and yes, I’ve got a few creative tricks up my sleeve if needed. 😉

Let’s keep your session real, honest, and true to how you actually show up in the world.
