Photo Retouching

As a professional headshot and branding photographer, I believe in creating images that capture each client at their best, while still looking like themselves. My approach to photo retouching is about enhancing, not altering, so you can look polished, confident, and authentic without any drastic changes to your natural features.

Below are my non-negotiable rules for photo retouching—guidelines I follow to ensure every client’s headshot is both professional and true to their unique personality.

I Enhance, Not Overhaul

When it comes to photo retouching, my philosophy is simple: enhance, don’t overhaul. My goal is to subtly polish areas that may need a little refinement, like smoothing out minor skin blemishes or adjusting the lighting on hair. But one thing I won’t do is completely change your appearance. You won’t look like a different person; instead, you’ll see a more polished version of yourself.

I work with each client to achieve a look that’s both professional and true-to-life, making sure every retouch feels authentic.

Photo Retouching

Skin Touch-Ups, Not Perfection

Skin retouching can be tricky—there’s a fine line between enhancing and overdoing it. I take a light touch with what I like to call “digital Botox”: I’ll soften fine lines, reduce minor blemishes, and smooth out any uneven areas, but I don’t erase every pore or make skin look plastic.

My goal is for your skin to look clean and refreshed, yet still natural and true to how you look day-to-day. By keeping the texture intact, I ensure the result feels real and true to you.

Polishing Hair (But Not Changing It)

Hair has a mind of its own, and it doesn’t always cooperate on shoot days! While I can tame flyaways and subtly adjust any areas that may need a boost, I won’t transform your hairstyle or change its natural texture.

Think of it as a “virtual haircut”—I might clean up a few stray strands and ensure everything looks polished, but you’ll still see your natural hair in the final image. This small touch keeps the focus on your face without distracting details.

Professional Headshot Editing

Clothes Get a Quick Polish

Clothes, just like hair, don’t always behave perfectly in front of the camera. I like to think of this as a “digital dry cleaning” process. I’ll smooth out wrinkles, adjust the appearance of fabric, and remove any small distractions like lint or creases. These edits make sure your clothing looks sharp and professional, but I won’t change the style or fit of your outfit.

Your wardrobe reflects who you are, and I want it to look as polished as you feel without altering the natural look and feel of your clothes.

Brightening (Not Replacing) Your Smile

A bright, confident smile can make a photo truly shine. I offer subtle teeth whitening in my photo retouching, adding just a bit of brightness if needed, so you look fresh and vibrant. However, I avoid any over-the-top changes. Your smile is an important part of who you are, and my goal is simply to bring out the best in it without making it look unnatural.

My approach ensures your smile looks healthy and natural—bright enough to make an impact but still very much your own.

Professional Headshot Retouching

Addressing Glasses and Minor Distractions

Eyeglasses can be a tricky part of any headshot, especially if they reflect light or cause glares. My approach to photo retouching ensures that any glass glare is reduced or removed, keeping the focus on your eyes. I also take care of minor distractions, like removing any stray hairs or small blemishes that may draw attention away from your face.

In every retouch, I’m focused on the details that matter—removing anything that might distract from your expression while leaving you authentically you.

What I Never Change: Your Natural Look and Expression

The most important part of any photo is you—your personality, your confidence, and your expression. As a photographer, I see my role as helping you find your best angle and guiding you into a pose that feels genuine. I don’t alter body shape, facial structure, or anything that fundamentally changes who you are. My job is to bring out the best in you, not to transform you.

Your headshot should be a powerful, authentic representation of who you are, and I’m here to capture that. Every pose, every expression, and every feature is genuinely you, with small, thoughtful edits to ensure you look polished and camera-ready.

Final Thoughts on My Photo Retouching Approach

As a photographer, my commitment to photo retouching is about enhancing your natural look, not altering it. Every retouch I do is carefully chosen to keep you looking authentic while allowing your personality to shine through. With the right balance of subtle edits and genuine expression, your headshot will be both professional and true to who you are.

If you’re considering a professional headshot, know that you’ll look polished and confident in your photo—not because I’ve changed anything about you, but because I’ve brought out what makes you unique and incredible. That’s the true power of thoughtful photo retouching.

I put together a Guide to Photography Gear for those of you who need some help deciding what is actually worth investing in (and what's not). The link is in my bio!

Lighting is one of those things that feels complicated when you’re starting out… but it doesn’t have to be.

At the end of the day—light is light.

You don’t need the most expensive setup to get good results. What matters more is having something reliable that you understand how to use.

Especially if you’re shooting outside… the last thing you want is a $2,000 light going down in the wind.

Start simple.
Focus on gear you can trust.
And build from there.

Curious—what lighting setup are you using right now?
My Photographer Gear Guide is linked in my bio if you’re trying to figure out what’s actually worth investing in when you’re first starting out.

Because the truth is—you don’t need everything right away.

When you’re new, it’s easy to feel like you need all the gear… but really, it comes down to a few key pieces.

A solid camera body and a really good lens will take you further than a full bag of equipment you don’t know how to use yet.

If you’re deciding where to spend your money, start there.

A 24–70mm or 70–200mm lens will cover more than you think—and give you the flexibility to shoot a wide range of sessions without overcomplicating things.

Curious—what was the first piece of gear you invested in?
‼️ No clients (or videographers) were harmed in the making of this video 🤣

(For the record—this is very much a joke.)

But if you are a photographer, you know the real challenge isn’t getting someone in front of the camera… it’s knowing how to guide them once they’re there.

Small adjustments = big difference in how confident and natural someone looks.

And having a go-to posing flow makes everything feel easier—for you and your client. (so you don't resort to violence 😉)

➡️ I put together a Headshot Posing Flow Cheat Sheet to help with exactly that—link in bio.
A quick look at the people and brands I had the chance to photograph this month 👇🏻

Grateful for every person and team that trusted me to capture this season of their business.

Each session is different, but the goal is always the same—to create images that actually represent you well and support where you’re going next.

If you’ve been thinking about updating your headshot or branding photos, now is a great time to get it scheduled before things get busy later in the year.

📩 You can book your session through the link in my bio.
