Headshot Angles Matter More Than You Think
Every so often, someone will walk into my studio and ask if I can photograph them from a high angle—“the selfie angle.” And I get it. We’ve all used that trick on our phones. A raised camera can feel flattering because it smooths the jawline, enlarges the eyes, and creates that familiar social-media look.
But here’s the thing: what works for a casual selfie does not translate into a professional headshot. In fact, that high-angle approach can quietly diminish the qualities you want to communicate most—confidence, approachability, and authority.
So I wanted to take a moment to explain why headshot angles matter so much, and why a selfie (or anything that mimics it) simply isn’t the right tool for showing up professionally.
A High Angle Sends the Wrong Message
In photography, angle is storytelling. A high angle—where the camera is looking down on you—naturally makes the subject appear smaller and less grounded. It softens your presence instead of strengthening it, and in a business context, that matters.
A professional headshot is meant to meet your audience at eye level. Eye-level framing communicates confidence, equality, and clarity. It’s the visual equivalent of a firm handshake and direct introduction.
When you want people to trust you—your clients, patients, team, or network—that grounded presence makes all the difference.

The Distortion Problem (Your Phone Isn’t Telling the Truth)
Selfies are taken with wide-angle lenses held far too close to the face. That combination creates distortion that most people never notice until they see the side-by-side:
- The forehead appears larger
- The chin recedes
- Facial proportions stretch unnaturally
- The background becomes warped
- Shoulders look narrower than they are
When you add a high angle to this distortion, the effect becomes even more exaggerated—and less flattering.
Professional photographers use longer focal lengths and proper working distance to preserve natural proportions. You look like you—just the most polished, confident version.
No Neck, No Structure, No Professionalism
This one surprises people, but shooting from above does something else: it takes away your neck.
The angle compresses the neckline, removes definition, and creates an unbalanced silhouette. In a headshot—where posture and presence carry so much weight—that lack of structure can make the entire image feel weaker.
Your professional portrait should show strength—not an angle that collapses your posture.
The Background Tells a Story, Too
With selfies, raising the camera also changes what’s behind you. Instead of a clean, intentional backdrop, you often end up with:
- Flooring
- Carpet
- Desk surfaces
- Distracting angles
- Unflattering downward “looking up” perspectives
Professional headshots rely on purposeful backgrounds that reinforce your brand, not random elements that break the visual narrative.

Consistency Matters—Especially in Team Photos
If you’re part of a corporate team, group, or leadership staff, consistency is key. You cannot have one person photographed from above while everyone else is shot at eye level. It instantly disrupts the visual cohesion of the team and, subconsciously, disrupts trust.
Teams should look unified, polished, and trustworthy—even in their headshots.
If You’re Hoping for a Slimming Effect, There Are Better Options
This is the real reason people ask for the selfie angle. And I promise—you don’t need it.
There are far more effective, professional techniques to achieve a flattering result:
- Subtle posing adjustments
- Micro-movements that define the jawline
- Leaning techniques that elongate the neck
- Chin positioning that prevents shadowing
- Professional lighting to sculpt the face
- Gentle, natural post-processing that refines without altering reality
You are never left guessing in my sessions—I guide you through all of this from head to toe.
The Bottom Line
A high-angle selfie may be great for Instagram, but it’s not the image you want representing your leadership, your expertise, or your business.
Professional headshots rely on intentional angles, lens choices, posture guidance, and lighting—working together to help you show up with authority and authenticity.
Because how you’re photographed shapes how you’re perceived.
And you deserve a headshot that communicates the truth: you are confident, capable, and absolutely worth taking seriously.
