Why Grey is a Great Background for Headshots
For corporate headshots especially, I like a standard grey background. Here’s why.
- Everyone looks great! No matter the skin color, hair color, or wardrobe selection, everyone looks great with this background. Light or dark skin, hair, and clothing shows beautifully.
- Easily repeatable. Many companies like to have headshots on the corporate website. When new employees join the team, the grey background can easily be replicated for the new employees and added to the website.
- It’s flexible. With a grey background, we can actually make any color from black to white depending on how much light falls on the background. So, it’s easy to adjust the tone of the background simply by adding or subtracting light.

I’ve been shooting headshots for Abercrombie & Associates, now Haynie & Company for several years. Any time a new employee comes on board, we get a headshot with the standard grey background. Again, it’s easily repeatable and looks great for everyone so it’s definitely a win for repeating headshots. The solid color focuses your attention on the face, which is the point of a headshot. Having the face as the lightest part of the image does the same thing. In a headshot, you want the viewer to immediately look at the face and not elsewhere like clothing, jewelry, or hair.
