The Ritual

Ritual: (noun), A ceremony with an established order of repeated words, phrases, or series of actions in front of an audience.

The rituals of our lives provide us time and space to honor the things that matter most to us. During a wedding, friends and family gather to celebrate the couple. Perhaps this is the only time both sides of this extended family will be in the same place at the same time. They gather because it’s an important part of honoring the people and relationships on their journey together. We participate in the ritual, share a meal together, and dance! Every part of the ritual is a chance to strengthen relationships and show our love and support.

Cherry + Dillard

The Cherry and Dillard families have grown together over many years. In high school, the couple dated for two years and eventually broke up. Fast forward many years, children, and lives lived to finding love again. The couple’s story reflected in the song by Lanco, “Greatest Love Story” tells it beautifully:

When I was gonna be your forever
You were gonna be my wife
But you went off to find better and I was learning all about life
But I was what you wanted and you were what I needed
And we could meet in between
We were gonna be the greatest love story this town had ever seen

Don’t be afraid to use the rituals of your life to honor and love the stages and places in big moments and small and the places in between. Love where you are and where you have yet to be.

When was the last time you looked at a photo of yourself and focused on what you liked instead of what you wanted to change?

As a photographer, I see it all the time. Someone steps in front of my camera and immediately starts pointing out the things they’re self-conscious about.

But here’s the thing… those are rarely the things everyone else sees. 🤍

We see the wrinkles, the extra weight, or the little imperfections. Others see our warmth, personality, confidence, and everything that makes us who we are.

And sometimes, that same critical voice follows us long after we’ve stepped away from the camera.

That’s why I’m so excited to feature Jennifer Barrett of Be Fit & Well Coaching as a guest on my blog!

Jennifer shares a beautiful perspective on self-image, the way we speak to ourselves, and one simple question that can help shift our mindset:

Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with me?” try asking, “What do I need?”

Headshots and branding photos… aren`t they basically the same thing? 📸

Not quite! While both are meant to represent you professionally, they serve different purposes.

Professional headshots are typically more traditional and polished. Think head-and-shoulders portraits with a clean studio backdrop or a professional office setting. They`re perfect for LinkedIn profiles, company websites, business cards, and anywhere you need a professional first impression.

Branding photography, on the other hand, tells a bigger story!

We`re talking full-body portraits, candid moments, interactive shots, and photos of you doing what you do best. Branding sessions can absolutely include headshots, too, but often with more personality and environmental elements that reflect your business.

The biggest difference? A headshot shows people who you are. Branding photography helps show them what you do and what it`s like to work with you.

And depending on your business and goals, you might benefit from both!

One of the sweetest parts of being a photographer? Getting to watch families grow right in front of my camera. 🤍

I’ve had the privilege of photographing this beautiful family several times over the years, and now their family has grown to include three sweet kiddos!

It’s so special to look back at previous sessions and see just how much has changed. New little faces, growing personalities, and so many memories made along the way.

And honestly, this is one of my favorite things about what I do.

I have families who come back year after year for updated portraits. I’ve photographed kids as they grow up, celebrated their senior year with them, and even welcomed some of those same familiar faces back for professional headshots as they begin their careers.

Getting to be a small part of all those different chapters in someone’s life is something I’ll never take for granted.

Because these aren’t just photos. They’re little pieces of your family’s story that you get to hold onto forever. 🤍

And to every family who continues to trust me with those memories, thank you. It truly means so much!
