Photography

Photography is the art, application and practice of creating durable images by recording light or other electromagnetic radiation, either electronically by means of an image sensor, or chemically by means of a light-sensitive material such as photographic film.

A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer, in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer.

With these two definitions at hand, it is clear to me that a headshot photographer is a portrait artist.  The intent of a headshot is to capture the likeness and personality of the subject.  A headshot photographer must master the technical skills of camera function and lighting.  Then, she must use the softer skills of posing, head position and angle, and expression, to create the most flattering image of a person.
