Headshots Outdoors

A popular option for modern headshots is doing the headshots outdoors.  Environmental headshots have several benefits.  First, the background of an environmental outdoor headshot lends itself to a warm, friendly and welcoming atmosphere.  It’s easy to see that the subject is outside with a gently blurred beautiful background.  Also, the headshot tends to feel a little less formal than a studio headshot.  It is relaxed and casual.  Finally, an environmental outdoor headshot can give context or information to the viewer besides just the likeness of the person.  It can give the viewer a sense of location or place – maybe even a sense of the office or workspace.  When planning your headshot session, keep an option open for headshots outdoors!

Headshots for Connections Family Center

Dr. Pasqua contacted me initially for her own headshot and that of a colleague.  This past week, she asked me to photograph two new team members.  The practice is successful and growing and I love to see that!  After Kelly and Teresa had hair and makeup at the office, they met me for the session.  I photographed them at the same locations so their headshots would have a similar feel.  They had many options to choose from and ultimately ended up with the selections below.  I love each of these for different reasons – Kelly’s image with the beautiful greenery in the background is soothing.  Teresa’s headshot with the warm tones and waterfall in the background are also soothing and beautiful.  The new headshots are already up on the website for potential clients to see.  Well done, Connections Family Center!

When you’re just getting started, it’s easy to think you need all the gear before you can take on client work.

You don’t.

For in-office headshots, a solid setup really comes down to a few essentials:
✅ reliable lighting
✅ a strong lens
✅ a backdrop
✅ reflectors to help control light and keep skin tones consistent

That’s how I’m able to create clean, professional headshots—without being in a studio.

And for branding? That’s where I shift.

Instead of a backdrop, I’m using the client’s space—capturing environmental images that feel more natural, personal, and aligned with their business.

Same session, two different approaches—both intentional.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not about having more gear…
it’s about knowing how to use what you have.

Shooting outdoors doesn’t always mean “perfect lighting.” 👇🏻

One of the biggest challenges with natural light is inconsistency—
skin tones can shift depending on shade, surroundings, and even reflections (hello green grass 👀).

That’s why I use off-camera flash, even outside.

It helps create:
✅ consistent skin tones
✅ balanced lighting
✅ a cleaner, more polished final image

So instead of guessing what the light is doing…
I’m controlling it.
