New Year, New Brand

As we step into a fresh year full of new opportunities, there’s no better time to reflect on your personal branding and ask yourself one critical question: Does your current headshot truly represent who you are and where you’re headed?

Your headshot is more than just a picture. It’s the cornerstone of your personal branding—the visual cue that sets the tone for how others perceive you professionally. From LinkedIn profiles to website bios, a professional headshot builds trust, conveys credibility, and signals that you’re ready to own 2025 with confidence.

Here’s why your headshot matters more than ever for your personal brand—and how keeping it fresh and aligned with your goals can set you up for success.

Why Your Headshot is Essential to Personal Branding

Think of your personal branding as the story you tell the world about who you are, what you stand for, and where you’re going. Every element of your brand, from your logo to your social media presence, works together to create this narrative—and your headshot is a central part of it.

Here’s why:

  • First Impressions Are Visual: Studies show that people form first impressions within seven seconds. Your headshot is often the first thing someone sees when connecting with you online, making it a key factor in shaping their perception.
  • It Sets the Tone: A professional headshot conveys your personality and professionalism. Whether you’re striving to look approachable, authoritative, or creative, your headshot sets the visual tone for your brand.
  • Consistency Builds Trust: When your headshot matches the vibe of your other branding elements, it reinforces your message and creates recognition. This kind of visual harmony is crucial for building trust with your audience.

Outdated Imagery Hurts Your Brand

One of the biggest mistakes professionals make is holding onto an outdated headshot for too long. Your brand evolves as you grow in your career—shouldn’t your imagery evolve too?

Using a headshot that no longer represents who you are can send the wrong message:

  • It might make you appear disconnected or outdated in your industry.
  • It could create confusion for clients, colleagues, or collaborators who meet you in person and don’t recognize the face they saw online.
  • Worst of all, it can undermine your confidence if you feel like the photo doesn’t reflect your best self.

Think of your headshot as a tool for alignment. If your current image doesn’t reflect your goals, values, or direction for 2025, it’s time for an update.

Reflect Your Goals with a Fresh Look

A new year is the perfect time to evaluate how your personal brand has grown and where it’s headed. Ask yourself:

  • What message do I want to send about my expertise?
  • How do I want people to feel when they see my professional image?
  • Does my current headshot match the vision I have for my career in 2025?

By answering these questions, you can gain clarity about the type of headshot that will serve you best. For example:

  • Entrepreneurs may want a confident, polished image that signals leadership.
  • Creatives might prefer something that showcases their personality and originality.
  • Corporate professionals might opt for a clean, classic look to emphasize reliability.

The world of branding photography is constantly evolving, and staying ahead of the curve can help your brand stand out. Here are a few trends to watch for in 2025:

  1. Authenticity Over Perfection: People are drawn to realness. Headshots that feel authentic and natural—like a candid smile or a dynamic pose—are becoming more popular.
  2. Vibrant Color Palettes: Bold background colors and creative lighting techniques can add a modern twist to your professional imagery.
  3. On-Location Shoots: Incorporating your workspace or industry setting can add context to your headshot, making it feel more connected to your story.
  4. Storytelling Elements: Beyond a simple headshot, professionals are investing in full branding sessions that capture a range of expressions and scenarios to use across their platforms.

Come along with me as I set up for a headshot + branding session 👇🏻

When you’re just getting started, it’s easy to think you need all the gear before you can take on client work.

You don’t.

For in-office headshots, a solid setup really comes down to a few essentials:
✅ reliable lighting
✅ a strong lens
✅ a backdrop
✅ reflectors to help control light and keep skin tones consistent

That’s how I’m able to create clean, professional headshots—without being in a studio.

And for branding? That’s where I shift.

Instead of a backdrop, I’m using the client’s space—capturing environmental images that feel more natural, personal, and aligned with their business.

Same session, two different approaches—both intentional.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not about having more gear…
it’s about knowing how to use what you have.

If your brand hasn’t been updated this year… this might be your sign 👇🏻

Summer is one of the best times to refresh your branding imagery—and most people don’t take advantage of it.

Things tend to slow down just enough to step back and actually look at what your brand is communicating.

And for a lot of businesses, this is when it becomes clear:
→ the photos don’t match the level you’re operating at anymore

A mid-year refresh isn’t about starting over—it’s about making sure your visuals reflect where you are now, not where you were a year ago.

But before you even book new photos… you need clarity.

What do you want your brand to feel like?
How do you want to show up?

That’s exactly why I created my Brand Personality Workbook—to help you define that first, so your photos actually align.

📥 Grab it through the link in my bio, and then let’s plan your next session.
Shooting outdoors doesn’t always mean “perfect lighting.” 👇🏻

One of the biggest challenges with natural light is inconsistency—
skin tones can shift depending on shade, surroundings, and even reflections (hello green grass 👀).

That’s why I use off-camera flash, even outside.

It helps create:
✅ consistent skin tones
✅ balanced lighting
✅ a cleaner, more polished final image

So instead of guessing what the light is doing…
I’m controlling it.

📥 If you’re a photographer trying to figure out lighting + gear, I’ve put together a guide with the setups I actually use—link in bio.
What it looks like behind the camera… vs. what you get 👇🏻

Different sessions, different people, different goals—
but always the same focus: helping you feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera.

Headshots, branding, families, seniors, and more… it all comes back to capturing people in a way that actually feels like them.

✨ If you’re ready to start planning your session, you can click the link in my bio.
You don’t need the most expensive gear to be a good photographer.

When I first started, I thought I needed everything—top-tier camera, expensive lighting, all of it.

The reality?

A solid camera and a good lens will take you a long way.

If you’re just starting out, keep it simple:
✨ A versatile zoom lens (24–70mm or 70–200mm)
✨ Gear you can rely on and learn inside and out

And when it comes to lighting—especially outdoors—don’t overinvest too early.

Wind happens. Gear gets knocked over. Things break.

Light is light.

Focus on learning how to use what you have before worrying about upgrading everything.
