Headshot Photography Tips

Planning for your headshot doesn’t need to be stressful!  With a little bit of advanced preparation, you’ll be ready for a great session.  Here are a few things to keep in mind before your headshot session.

  1. Get plenty of rest and stay hydrated before the session.
  2. Make sure your hair and nails are cut and manicured.  Sometimes the nails show in a headshot and you’ll want them to look their best.  Decide if you’d like a watch to show.  But don’t try a new haircut the day before your session!
  3. Try on the wardrobe that you’ve selected for the headshot.  Your photographer can advise on the best wardrobe.  Make sure it fits and is pressed.
  4. Talk to your photographer about a plan for the session including what you’ll be wearing so that he or she can coordinate backgrounds, lighting, etc.
  5. Talk to your photographer about any issues that may arise during the session or anything that needs special attention.
  6. Arrive for your session and relax!  The best, most natural portraits of you will be those where you’re relaxed and can genuinely smile.  If it helps, bring a friend or spouse along to the session!

Headshots for Encana

I photographed the executives for Newfield many times.  The new company is Encana and they needed an updated headshot for one of their leaders.  We met in the office and set up in a conference room.  We were able to get some fantastic headshots quickly and efficiently!  I love the very last image!

Shutter speed is one of those things that feels confusing… until it clicks. 😉📸

For headshots, you don’t need anything complicated — just a solid, consistent range and an understanding of how your lighting plays into it.

If you’re a new photographer trying to figure all of this out, I’ve put together a few resources to help you get started — from gear to posing and more.

Most people step in front of the camera thinking, “I have no idea what to do.”

That’s where I come in.

Every small adjustment you see here — posture, hands, angles — is intentional. It’s what turns a quick headshot into something confident and professional.

If you want to learn the poses I rely on most, I put together a guide breaking them down.

If you’re just getting into headshot photography, it’s easy to feel like you need everything to get started.

You don’t.

A solid light setup, a reliable camera, and a lens you can trust will take you a lot further than you think.

📸 For me, that looks like a Nikon Z7II mirrorless camera + a 70–200mm lens, paired with a simple lighting setup that keeps things consistent and professional.

It’s not about having the most gear — it’s about having the right setup and knowing how to use it.
