Headshots for the medical professional

We live in a digital world.  Sometimes, a patient’s first meeting with doctors, surgeons, specialists, pharmacists, dentists, and orthodontists is online via a website.  It is therefore critical for medical professionals to have a recent, professional headshot for this first meeting.  You have control over the patient’s feelings about you before they even meet you face-to-face.  I prefer doctors and dentists to be open, friendly, and welcoming in their headshots.  Wear regular professional clothing and be approachable.  Smiling is a good thing!  I will help with posing and expression to achieve this goal as well.  Together, we can create a headshot that patients will find capable, professional, and friendly.  They will feel as though they can easily have a conversation with you before ever stepping foot in your office.

Meet Aman

Aman is a pharmacist for Sam’s Club in Conroe.  He was selected to be in the monthly health newsletter for Sam’s Club and needed a headshot.  I was contacted by Ivie & Associates, a marketing agency handling the project.  Aman  and I met in Sam’s Club and we found an empty office for the headshot.  I set up all of my lighting equipment in the office and was ready to shoot!  The article for the newsletter has a certain format and so Aman had to be positioned in such a way to best fit the newsletter space.  A few shots later and he was back to work!

Shutter speed is one of those things that feels confusing… until it clicks. 😉📸

For headshots, you don’t need anything complicated — just a solid, consistent range and an understanding of how your lighting plays into it.

If you’re a new photographer trying to figure all of this out, I’ve put together a few resources to help you get started — from gear to posing and more.

Most people step in front of the camera thinking, “I have no idea what to do.”

That’s where I come in.

Every small adjustment you see here — posture, hands, angles — is intentional. It’s what turns a quick headshot into something confident and professional.

If you want to learn the poses I rely on most, I put together a guide breaking them down.

If you’re just getting into headshot photography, it’s easy to feel like you need everything to get started.

You don’t.

A solid light setup, a reliable camera, and a lens you can trust will take you a lot further than you think.

📸 For me, that looks like a Nikon Z7II mirrorless camera + a 70–200mm lens, paired with a simple lighting setup that keeps things consistent and professional.

It’s not about having the most gear — it’s about having the right setup and knowing how to use it.
