Environmental Portraits

Headshots have been a major portion of my business since it’s beginning in 2010.  I have refined my skills since then and my practices surrounding headshots.  I ask a lot of questions.  The answers to my questions help to direct the shoot and help me to give you suggestions for what to wear, what backgrounds we will use, and so on.  The standard studio headshot with a white, black, or grey background is a classic.  You can’t go wrong with the studio shot.  However, sometimes a more casual outdoor look with a natural environment is a great choice for a headshot.  This environmental portrait provides a relaxed atmosphere.  It is professional yet warm, friendly, and relatable.

Headshots for Glen

Glen contacted me needing updated headshots.  He knew from the beginning that he wanted both a classic studio shot with his coat and tie but also an outdoor environmental shot.  So we started with the studio shot in my home studio.  Then we went to the park as the sun was just about to do down for the evening.  We found some beautiful light coming through the trees behind him and set up shop in the park.  The natural green background and touch of sun provide a warm glow and a very natural headshot.  Glen can use these environmental portraits for anything from social media profiles to proposals and still look professional.  I’m so glad that we made the effort to capture both the studio and the environmental headshot.

When you’re just getting started, it’s easy to think you need all the gear before you can take on client work.

You don’t.

For in-office headshots, a solid setup really comes down to a few essentials:
✅ reliable lighting
✅ a strong lens
✅ a backdrop
✅ reflectors to help control light and keep skin tones consistent

That’s how I’m able to create clean, professional headshots—without being in a studio.

And for branding? That’s where I shift.

Instead of a backdrop, I’m using the client’s space—capturing environmental images that feel more natural, personal, and aligned with their business.

Same session, two different approaches—both intentional.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not about having more gear…
it’s about knowing how to use what you have.

One of the biggest challenges with natural light is inconsistency—
skin tones can shift depending on shade, surroundings, and even reflections (hello green grass 👀).

That’s why I use off-camera flash, even outside.

It helps create:
✅ consistent skin tones
✅ balanced lighting
✅ a cleaner, more polished final image

So instead of guessing what the light is doing…
I’m controlling it.
