Professional Photos and Your Job Search | Houston Headshot Photographer

As you are pulling yourself together and getting ready to embark on a job search, is it necessary to have a professional photo to go along with your resume?  I think it is becoming more and more important, but there are a few things to consider before you pick out a snapshot and paste it next to your name.

First of all, there are a couple of things I have to say:

  • In the United States, it is generally illegal for employers to consider your photo in a hiring decision. If an employer can’t use race, ethnicity, gender, etc. to make a hiring decision, it may not be smart to include your photo on your resume itself.  After all, your resume is a tool to get you hired, right?
  • Second, recruiters are human. If they are good, smart recruiters, they won’t judge you based on your picture.  However, if they met 300 candidates at a job fair yesterday, your photo may help them remember you from everyone else.

I absolutely do not think you should include your photo on your resume, barring a few exceptions.  However, job searches today are so much more than resume drop-offs.  Your LinkedIn profile, Facebook information, and personal website are integral parts of your job search.  Having a photo as part of your online presence is critical.  That scary grey silhouette that comes with an incomplete profile is not how you want recruiters to see you.  You want them to know that you spent some time developing your online profile, and that you care about how you present yourself.  You also want them to be able to distinguish you from the other 412 people on LinkedIn with a similar name.

If recruiters are searching online profiles to actively seek out potential candidates, they are much more likely to view a profile if it includes a photo.  No one clicks on a profile that seems incomplete at first glance.

When should you include your photo on your resume or other printed materials?

  • You’ve been on the cover of a major industry-relevant publication.
  • You are an actor, model, or in a similar profession.
  • You’re looking for customers, not an employer. (Think of realtors, personal trainers, and stylists.)

What should you consider when choosing a photo for your profile?

  • It portrays professionalism. (That means no visible cocktail glasses, even if it was a company event.)
  • It suits your industry. If you are an attorney, you probably want to be wearing a suit.  If you are a chef, an action shot of you in the kitchen might be more fitting.
  • It was taken specifically for this purpose. You don’t want to crop your buddies out of a photo and use what’s left on your profile.
  • It’s not boring. If there is a cinder block wall behind you, it’s going to look more like a mug shot than a head shot.

As with every part of your job search, there is a fine line between being the best candidate you can be and just being yourself.  Your photo is a great way to inject a little personality into your profile!

You don't need to BE confident to show up for a headshot session. The session creates the confidence.

Most professionals avoid updating their headshots because they think they need to feel confident first. But that's backwards.

My clients are always surprised by how great their photos look—and that instant confidence boost changes how they show up in their business.

Here's what happens when you work with me: 👇🏼

→ I guide your posing so you look natural and professional
→ I direct your expression so your personality shines through
→ I handle the lighting so you look polished and approachable
→ You walk away with imagery that makes you feel like the expert you already are

You don't need to know how to pose or what to do with your hands. That's my job. Your job is just to show up.

Ready to stop waiting until you "feel confident enough"? Let's create the confidence together.

Here's the truth 👇🏻

Most professionals avoid headshots because they're scared it'll feel awkward, forced, or fake.

But here's what happens when you skip it ⬇️

❌ Outdated LinkedIn profiles
❌ Inconsistent team branding
❌ Missed opportunities to build instant credibility.

Can you spot the difference? 👀

Same company. Same brand consistency. Three different years.

This is the power of a group composite - and it's a game-changer for growing teams.

Here's how it works 👇🏻

Instead of wrestling with everyone's schedule to get your entire team in one place at one time (we all know that's impossible), I photograph each person individually. Then I composite them together into a polished group photo that looks like everyone showed up on the same day.

Why this solves your biggest scheduling nightmare:

✅ New hire starts next month? Add them seamlessly to your existing team photo
✅ Team member leaves? Update the composite without re-scheduling everyone
✅ Remote employees? They can get photographed separately and added in
✅ Someone's unavailable on photo day? No problem - we'll catch them later
✅ Your team photo always looks current and complete

Most businesses struggle with outdated team photos because coordinating 15+ calendars feels impossible. Group composites eliminate that friction entirely.

Here's the truth: feeling awkward on camera isn't about you—it's about not knowing what to do with yourself.

Most professionals freeze up because they're thinking about how they look instead of what they're communicating. That self-consciousness? It shows up in every frame.

Here's what actually works:
✅ Give yourself something to do with your hands (gesture naturally, hold something meaningful)
✅ Think about your MESSAGE, not your appearance
✅ Remember: confidence comes from preparation, not perfection

When you show up prepared and focused on serving your audience, that natural confidence comes through. And that's what builds credibility and connection.

Exciting update for 2025: I’m now using Headshot Tools to make your team headshots even smoother!

Here's the truth: The hardest part of team headshots isn't the photography—it's the chaos that comes after.

Tracking who chose which image. Chasing down approvals. Keeping everyone organized.

This year, I've integrated a system that eliminates all of that:

✨ Private proof galleries for each team member
📸 They choose their favorite on their own time
✅ I see selections instantly and deliver retouched images back to their gallery

No group emails. No confusion. No chasing people down.

When you bring me to your next corporate event, your team gets professional headshots without the coordination nightmare.

Want flawless, consistent headshots every single time? Here's the secret 👇🏻

The right equipment and settings.

When you're starting out, headshot photography can feel inconsistent—great results one session, frustrating the next.

Here's what I've learned: Consistency isn't about luck. It's about dialing in your setup.

✅ The right lens and focal length
✅ Lighting that flatters every face
✅ Camera settings you can replicate
✅ A process that works under pressure

When you nail these fundamentals, you stop second-guessing yourself. Your clients get professional results every time. And you build a reputation for quality they can count on.

Drop your questions in the comments—let's talk through what's working (or what's not) in your setup.
