Spring Family Photos: 5 Tips for a Picture-Perfect Session

Spring Family Photos

Spring is the perfect time to capture beautiful, joyful moments with your loved ones. With nature in full bloom and soft, golden light, spring family photos create lasting memories filled with warmth and color. To make the most of your session, here are five must-know tips for a picture-perfect photoshoot!

1. Choosing the Perfect Location

One of the most important aspects of your spring family photos is selecting the right setting. Springtime offers stunning natural backdrops, from lush green parks to colorful wildflower fields. Here are three of my favorite locations for spring sessions:

  • WG Jones State Forest – With multiple entrances to choose from, this location offers a variety of scenic spots depending on the time of year. Towering pine trees and open fields create a peaceful, natural setting for spring family photos.
  • Rob Fleming Park at Creekside – This park boasts gorgeous landscaping, a picturesque pond, and vibrant spring blooms, making it an ideal location for capturing bright airy family photos.
  • Alden Bridge Park – A beautiful, family-friendly setting with charming bridges, walking paths, and plenty of greenery. The mix of open space and shaded areas provides the perfect balance for natural and well-lit portraits.

When choosing a location, consider places that hold special meaning for your family, like a favorite picnic spot or a scenic trail. Also, keep lighting in mind—early mornings and the golden hour just before sunset provide the most flattering, soft glow for your photos.

2. Picking the Right Outfits

Coordinating outfits can make a huge difference in how your photos turn out. Here’s what to keep in mind when dressing your family:

  • Stick with soft, natural colors like pastels, earth tones, or light neutrals to complement the spring scenery.
  • Coordinate without being too “matchy”—mix textures and subtle patterns while keeping a cohesive color palette.
  • Avoid logos, overly busy patterns, or neon colors that can distract from the overall look.

Comfort is key! Make sure everyone feels good in what they’re wearing so they can move naturally and enjoy the session.

3. Keeping Kids Happy and Engaged

Little ones bring energy and joy to family photos, but keeping them engaged requires a little planning:

  • Make sure kids are well-rested and have had a snack before the session.
  • Bring along a favorite toy or stuffed animal for comfort (and as a fun prop!).
  • Plan for movement—let kids twirl, run, or play for natural, joyful expressions.

By keeping the session lighthearted and playful, your photos will feel genuine and full of life.

4. Embracing the Springtime Weather

Spring is beautiful but can also be unpredictable. Be prepared for changing weather conditions with these tips:

  • Dress in layers or bring a light cardigan in case of a chilly breeze.
  • If there’s a chance of rain, consider bringing an umbrella or rain boots for a charming, unexpected spring-themed look.
  • Be flexible with location changes if needed—sometimes, a last-minute shift can lead to a magical setting!

The best family photos come from genuine interactions and emotions. Instead of worrying about every little detail, focus on having fun with your loved ones!

Photographers: the secret to family sessions with little kids? Stop expecting them to follow the plan. 😂📸

Young kids are going to move. They’re going to get distracted. They may decide halfway through that they’re completely DONE with your ideas—and that’s okay.

Instead of fighting it, work with it.

Keep them moving and engaged. Give them something to do instead of constantly asking them to smile. And don’t forget to coach Mom and Dad, too! Encourage them to interact with their kids, keep looking at you when you need the classic family shot, and trust you to get the moment.

Because some of the best images happen in between the poses—the laughs, cuddles, movement, and little expressions you couldn’t have planned if you tried.

You don’t need perfectly behaved kids to create beautiful family portraits. You need patience, flexibility, and a few tricks ready when your original plan goes out the window. 😉

I think family photos mean something a little different to me now. 🤍

For years, I was the mom hanging new portraits on the walls while my kids were still living at home. Then came senior portraits, graduations, and eventually watching both of them head off to start their own next chapters.

Now that my youngest is off at college, the house is a whole lot quieter.

But everywhere I look, there they are.

On the walls. In frames. In albums. All of these different versions of our family and my kids at ages I can’t go back to.

And maybe that’s why I feel so strongly about family portraits.

When you’re in the middle of raising your kids, it’s easy to think there will always be another year. Another fall. Another chance to schedule the photos.

There probably will be.

But they’ll never be exactly this age again.

Take the photos. Print them. Put them on your walls. Let your home fill up with the people you love.

Someday, you’ll be really glad you did. 🤍

But seriously—if you’re a headshot or portrait photographer and you haven’t tried shooting tethered yet, let me introduce you to one of my favorite workflow upgrades.

Tethering simply means connecting your camera to a computer so your images appear on a larger screen as you shoot. I use a wired connection straight into Capture One, which makes it easy to review images during the session, catch the little details I might miss on the back of my camera, and favorite the strongest shots as I go.

And when I’m finished? My selects are already organized, so I can transfer everything to my main computer at home and jump into editing without sorting through the entire session all over again.

I used to tether wirelessly, but switching to a wired setup has made the process much more reliable and seamless for me.

It’s one of those small workflow changes that makes a BIG difference—especially when you photograph a lot of headshots.
