Why Get a Professional Headshot?

You might have seen a recent post on LinkedIn about someone who changed her “professional” headshot to a snapshot of herself to reflect the true picture of her current situation. First, I’m unsure about whether her original headshot was actually taken by a headshot photographer. Either way, I completely disagree that the snapshot best represents her. Everything about that snapshot says that she didn’t make the time or commitment to represent herself in the best way possible. A snapshot is just that – a photo taken in the moment with minimal planning or preparation.

In five seconds, your headshot conveys a message. Is this the message that you’d like to send to potential employers, customers, patients, and partners? I think not. You want people to know that you are committed, confident, and reliable. Why would you settle for anything but the absolute best? A headshot photographer uses lighting, posing, and cropping to make you look like the best version of you! Finally, making a small time and financial investment in a professional headshot is the best investment that you can make in yourself and your business.

Headshot Examples

Here are some recent examples of my clients’ headshots. A headshot can be done in the studio, with natural light, or outdoors. First, talk to your headshot photographer about yourself and your business. Then, plan for the session including wardrobe, location, and the message you want to convey. Finally, relax and enjoy your photography session knowing that you’ve prepared for a fantastic portrait. It can represent you in an authentic way and still be professionally lit and posed. When you’re just getting started, it’s easy to think you need all the gear before you can take on client work.

And for branding? That’s where I shift.

Instead of a backdrop, I’m using the client’s space—capturing environmental images that feel more natural, personal, and aligned with their business.

Same session, two different approaches—both intentional.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not about having more gear…
it’s about knowing how to use what you have.

skin tones can shift depending on shade, surroundings, and even reflections (hello green grass 👀).

That’s why I use off-camera flash, even outside.

It helps create:
✅ consistent skin tones
✅ balanced lighting
✅ a cleaner, more polished final image

So instead of guessing what the light is doing…
I’m controlling it.
