When to update your headshot

When was the last time you updated your headshot?  If it’s been more than a year or two, it’s probably time for an update.  I know that you were younger and thinner in your last photo but here are a few things to consider.  Remember that this headshot instills trust with clients and step one is that your headshot represents who you are now!

  1. Has your look changed dramatically (weight loss, hair length for women, got glasses or got rid of them)?  If you look completely different than in your past photo, it’s time for an update.
  2. Has your role or company changed?  If you’re now in a different role, you might need a new look to compliment that role.  Or a different company may have a different look.
  3. Have you started a new venture?  If so, new images will create interest and speak to your potential clients.
  4. What is the quality of your current headshot?  If it’s blurry or distracting or cropped too tight or too loose or over/under-exposed, it’s time for a new headshot.  All of these things affect your impression.

Headshot Samples

Here are some recent headshot sessions.  Most of these are updates for new employees at companies that I have photographed in the past.  When we use a studio setup, it’s easy to add new employees to the mix and have a coherent look with the rest of your company’s headshots.

Shutter speed is one of those things that feels confusing… until it clicks. 😉📸

For headshots, you don’t need anything complicated — just a solid, consistent range and an understanding of how your lighting plays into it.

If you’re a new photographer trying to figure all of this out, I’ve put together a few resources to help you get started — from gear to posing and more.

Most people step in front of the camera thinking, “I have no idea what to do.”

That’s where I come in.

Every small adjustment you see here — posture, hands, angles — is intentional. It’s what turns a quick headshot into something confident and professional.

If you want to learn the poses I rely on most, I put together a guide breaking them down.

If you’re just getting into headshot photography, it’s easy to feel like you need everything to get started.

You don’t.

A solid light setup, a reliable camera, and a lens you can trust will take you a lot further than you think.

📸 For me, that looks like a Nikon Z7II mirrorless camera + a 70–200mm lens, paired with a simple lighting setup that keeps things consistent and professional.

It’s not about having the most gear — it’s about having the right setup and knowing how to use it.
