Tips for Beginner Photographers

When I first started as a photographer, I thought success came down to one thing: having better gear.

A better camera. A sharper lens. A more expensive setup.

But after 15+ years working as a full-time freelance photographer, I can tell you this:

That’s not what actually builds a successful photography business.

If you’re just starting out as a freelance photographer, these are the lessons that will move you forward — not just creatively, but professionally.

Who This Is For

This is for you if you’re:

  • Starting your journey as a freelance photographer
  • Trying to turn photography into a source of income
  • Feeling overwhelmed by what you should focus on first

If that sounds familiar, keep reading.

The Truth About Becoming a Freelance Photographer

There’s a lot of noise in the photography world.

You’ll hear about:

  • The newest camera gear
  • The “must-have” lenses
  • The perfect editing style

But most of that skips over what actually matters when you’re working with real clients.

As a freelance photographer, your job goes far beyond taking a good photo.

Clients hire you because they trust you to:

  • Guide them
  • Make them feel comfortable
  • Deliver consistent, professional results

That’s what builds a sustainable business.

1. Stop Obsessing Over Gear (Start Understanding Light)

If there’s one thing I wish every beginner freelance photographer understood, it’s this:

Light matters more than your camera.

You can create strong, professional images with simple equipment if you understand:

  • Direction of light
  • Soft vs. hard light
  • How light shapes your subject

This is what allows you to deliver consistent results — regardless of location or setup.

Not Sure What Gear You Actually Need?

If you’re starting out as a freelance photographer and feel overwhelmed by gear choices, I put together a free guide to simplify it.

Inside, you’ll find:
✔ Cameras I use in my business
✔ Lighting setups and modifiers
✔ Backdrops for headshots + branding
✔ Software and workflow tools

2. Learn How to Direct People (This Changes Everything)

This is where most beginner photographers struggle.

You might understand your camera… but when a client steps in front of you, everything changes.

Here’s the shift:

As a freelance photographer, your job is to lead the session — not just document it.

That means:

  • Showing clients how to pose
  • Adjusting posture and expression
  • Giving clear, confident direction

This is what turns an average photo into something clients actually love.

3. Find Your Niche (You Don’t Have to Shoot Everything)

One of the biggest mistakes beginner freelance photographers make is trying to shoot everything.

Weddings, families, pets, events — all at once.

But when you specialize, things start to click.

You:

  • Improve faster
  • Build a stronger portfolio
  • Attract the right clients
  • Become known for something specific

For me, that niche became professional headshots and branding photography. That’s where I’ve built the majority of my business.

I still photograph seniors and families occasionally, but my core focus is working with professionals and businesses.

And that clarity makes everything easier:

  • Marketing
  • Pricing
  • Client communication

If you’re just starting out, pay attention to:
→ What you enjoy shooting
→ What you’re naturally good at
→ What people are already asking you for

That’s usually where your niche begins.

4. Confidence Matters More Than Perfection

You don’t need to know everything to start working as a freelance photographer.

But you do need to show up with confidence.

Clients rely on you for direction.

When you:

  • Speak clearly
  • Guide the session
  • Stay calm and encouraging

They relax — and that’s when your best work happens.

5. Simplicity Will Always Win

When you’re starting out, it’s easy to overcomplicate things.

But especially in headshots and branding:

  • Clean backgrounds
  • Simple setups
  • Consistent lighting

…will always feel more professional than something overly busy.

Simple = repeatable
Repeatable = scalable
Scalable = business growth

6. Your Workflow Matters More Than You Think

Taking the photo is only part of the job.

As a freelance photographer, your client experience includes:

  • Communication
  • Organization
  • Image delivery

A smooth, professional process builds trust — and repeat business.

7. Client Experience Is Everything

This is what most beginner freelance photographers overlook.

People may not remember:

  • Your camera
  • Your lighting setup

But they will remember:

  • How you made them feel
  • Whether they felt confident
  • Whether they enjoyed the session

That’s what leads to referrals.

That’s what builds a business.

Final Thoughts: Focus on What Actually Builds a Business

After 15 years as a freelance photographer, I can confidently say this:

The biggest growth in my career didn’t come from upgrading my gear. It came from understanding people, refining my process, and creating an experience clients trust.

If you focus on those things, everything else will follow.

Start Simple, Then Build

If you’re feeling stuck on where to start, begin with your setup.

‼️ No clients (or videographers) were harmed in the making of this video 🤣

(For the record—this is very much a joke.)

But if you are a photographer, you know the real challenge isn’t getting someone in front of the camera… it’s knowing how to guide them once they’re there.

Small adjustments = big difference in how confident and natural someone looks.

And having a go-to posing flow makes everything feel easier—for you and your client. (so you don't resort to violence 😉)

➡️ I put together a Headshot Posing Flow Cheat Sheet to help with exactly that—link in bio.
A quick look at the people and brands I had the chance to photograph this month 👇🏻

Grateful for every person and team that trusted me to capture this season of their business.

Each session is different, but the goal is always the same—to create images that actually represent you well and support where you’re going next.

If you’ve been thinking about updating your headshot or branding photos, now is a great time to get it scheduled before things get busy later in the year.

Taking team photos that actually look like your team 👇🏻

Clean. Consistent. Professional.

Because when your entire team shows up cohesively across your website, LinkedIn, and marketing… it makes a difference.

It builds trust.
It feels more established.
And it reflects the level your business is operating at today.

If you’re planning a team session, there’s more to it than just picking a date and showing up.

That’s exactly why I created a Corporate Headshot Planner—to help you organize everything ahead of time so your session runs smoothly and your final images feel aligned.

📥 Grab it through the link in my bio and start planning your team’s update.
This is why good branding photos feel different 👇🏻

A strong session isn’t just about showing up and taking a few pictures.

It’s about direction.
It’s about intention.
It’s about creating images you can actually use across your business.

The end result should feel aligned—like your photos finally match the level you’re operating at now.

But here’s the part most people skip…
Before you ever step in front of the camera, you need clarity on your brand.

✅ What do you want your brand to feel like?
✅ How do you want to show up?

That’s exactly why I created my Brand Personality Workbook—to help you define that first so your photos actually work for you.

📥 Grab it through the link in my bio, then let’s plan your session.
It’s funny… people assume I’m just showing up, taking photos, and moving on.

But in reality, I’m rooting for my clients long after the session is over.

Hoping they feel more confident.
Hoping they land the opportunity.
Hoping their photos help them show up the way they’ve been wanting to.

Because it’s never just about the pictures.

📩 If you’re ready for photos that actually support where you’re going, you can book through the link in my bio.
