The Studio Headshot

The location of the headshot session has a huge effect on the final outcome of the headshots.  You want to look great – so think about hair, makeup, and wardrobe.  But it’s also important to think about location.  The studio headshot can be so much more than your standard grey background headshot.  It can be light and airy or dark and formal.  It can be environmental.  The alternative is an on-location headshot where the photographer comes to you.  Do you have a unique office space that lends itself to telling the story of your brand?  Then use it for your headshot session.  Talk to your photographer about the company and the message that you want to convey to customers and decide on the best location for your headshots.

Session with Brandi

Brandi contacted me when the Covid-19 virus invaded our lives.  We put the headshot session on hold to ensure everyone’s safety.  We were recently able to make the session happen with masks and social distancing.  After renting space at The Studio HTX, we met for hair and makeup services and the session.  What a great space!  It’s bright and industrial and has beautiful natural light (any photographer’s dream).  Brandi brought her sister along after their vacation in Galveston.  She was there for moral support and a glass of wine 🙂  I love having family members at sessions because it’s a little easier to loosen up and be yourself!

Shutter speed is one of those things that feels confusing… until it clicks. 😉📸

For headshots, you don’t need anything complicated — just a solid, consistent range and an understanding of how your lighting plays into it.

If you’re a new photographer trying to figure all of this out, I’ve put together a few resources to help you get started — from gear to posing and more.

Most people step in front of the camera thinking, “I have no idea what to do.”

That’s where I come in.

Every small adjustment you see here — posture, hands, angles — is intentional. It’s what turns a quick headshot into something confident and professional.

If you want to learn the poses I rely on most, I put together a guide breaking them down.

If you’re just getting into headshot photography, it’s easy to feel like you need everything to get started.

You don’t.

A solid light setup, a reliable camera, and a lens you can trust will take you a lot further than you think.

📸 For me, that looks like a Nikon Z7II mirrorless camera + a 70–200mm lens, paired with a simple lighting setup that keeps things consistent and professional.

It’s not about having the most gear — it’s about having the right setup and knowing how to use it.
