Surprise Birthdays

Planning an event or party can be stressful!  When it’s a surprise party, it’s even more stressful to keep everything a secret.  But a few preparations ahead of time will ensure a smooth process and a wonderful surprise!  First, decide on the location of the party.  Having it at the honoree’s home will make it a little more challenging because you’ll have to make sure they are away the day of the party so that you can decorate and prepare the food.  Holding the party at another location like an event venue or restaurant might be easier.  Then, invite guests and be sure to let them know it’s a surprise.  Include details about where they should park and their arrival time so that it doesn’t coincide with the birthday person!  Next, plan a fake event for the birthday person to throw them off a bit and have them focus on something else that day.  Finally, it’s helpful for the birthday person to have a chaperone on the day of the party.  The chaperone can ensure that the birthday person gets to the place on time but not before.  Happy planning!

A Party for Trisha

I was invited to capture a surprise birthday party for Trisha.  The event coordinator arranged everything.  Her home was beautifully decorated and all the details were meticulously planned by Trisha’s daughter.  She even made the gorgeous flower arrangements that adorned the house.  Trisha’s husband made sure that she arrived just on time to the party.  When she entered the house, it was clear that she had no idea about the surprise and was clearly taken aback.  Her tears and smiles told the whole story.  Surrounded by family and friends, Trisha celebrated her birthday!  Her sisters and brother were there and her kids and their families.  What a fun celebration and a beautiful surprise.

The catering was provided by 1836 Steakhouse.  Everyone enjoyed appetizers, drinks, and a lovely sit-down dinner.  Her cake was adorned with colorful flowers- it was truly one-of-a-kind.  Truly a beautiful event!

But in all seriousness—photographers love a good piece of gear.

And it’s really easy to convince yourself that the next upgrade is what’s going to take your work to the next level.

Sometimes that’s true.

If a piece of equipment makes your workflow smoother, more efficient, or solves a real problem for you—it’s worth every penny.

But if it’s just shiny, new, and replacing something that already works… it can probably wait.

The goal isn’t to have more gear—it’s to have the right gear for how you actually shoot.

🔗 If you’re trying to figure out what’s actually worth investing in, I put together a Photographer Gear Guide that breaks it all down—link in bio.

🤔 Curious… what’s one piece of equipment you’ve bought that was 100% worth it?
A small snapshot of the teams I’ve worked with recently 📸👇🏻

Headshots are one of those things that are easy to put off… until you realize your photos no longer reflect where you are now.

Outdated images, inconsistent team photos, or a mix of styles across platforms can quietly take away from how your brand is perceived.

A headshot refresh doesn’t have to be complicated—it just needs to be intentional.

If your team’s photos haven’t been updated in a while, this is a good time to take a look at what you’re currently using.

Some of my favorite senior photos always include something personal.

Instruments, sports gear, pets, cars—these are the details that make your photos feel like you.

Senior sessions aren’t just about getting a few good pictures—they’re about capturing this season in a way that feels real and meaningful.

And with senior year right around the corner, now is the time to start thinking about it.

Spots tend to fill up quickly once the school year gets going, so planning ahead makes all the difference.

“Pick something you’d do for free…” It sounds simple—but building a career around it is anything but.

There’s a lot that goes into turning photography into something sustainable—learning your craft, understanding lighting, figuring out your gear, working with clients, and continuing to grow.

But if you’re willing to put in the time, it’s one of the most rewarding things you can do.

If you’re just getting started, I have a few free resources to help you figure out what actually matters (and what doesn’t).

🔗 You can grab them with the link in my bio.
At the end of the day, it’s not about the title—it’s about what the photos actually do for you.

For most teams, the hardest part isn’t getting the photos taken… it’s coordinating everything around it.

Schedules, availability, keeping the look consistent across everyone—it adds up quickly, and it’s usually why it gets pushed off.

That’s exactly why I created a Corporate Team Headshot Planner—to make the process simple, organized, and easy to execute from start to finish.
