The Significance of Family Photos

When was the last time your family had portraits made? The significance of family photos varies from one family to the next. But for many, family photos are extremely important and significant. These photos represent where you are now. And where you have been. It holds a moment steady in time. A moment that will never be the same again. Through the years, you can watch your children grow and mature into these beautiful young people who are caring and thoughtful in their own ways. People who are separate from you but so connected to you that you can’t imagine your life any other way that it is right now. Our families will change but the portraits that we make today will last forever. You can always hold onto the memory of that day.

The Maer Family

The Maer family had a great time taking family portraits. The girls loved it and were making up poses as we went along. This family, though, like most, has experienced loss. The family photos represent who they are today but also who they have lost. It is a bittersweet moment to hold with tenderness. I am truly honored to have been able to capture their beautiful family as it is and to honor those they have lost. We will put family portraits on the wall and enjoy them. We will honor those memories and hold them close.

I recently showed up to a headshot session at an office building with all my gear—ready to go—and security wouldn’t let me in.

Not because anything was wrong… but because there was a miscommunication, and I didn’t have a certificate of insurance on file with the building.

It’s one of those things you don’t think about when you’re first starting out—but it matters.

As you grow and start booking more corporate or on-location sessions, these small admin details become part of the job.

Clear communication with your client (or their admin team) ahead of time can save you a lot of stress on shoot day.

One of the biggest things I hear from senior guys is:
“I don’t know how to pose…”

And honestly—you don’t need to.

That’s my job.

Most of the poses you see here are simple, natural, and just small adjustments that make a big difference on camera. The goal isn’t to feel stiff or over-posed—it’s to look like yourself, just a little more confident.

I’ll guide you through everything during your session so it feels easy and relaxed the entire time.

Senior year is coming up quickly, and sessions start filling up once the school year gets going.
