Professional Family Photos

Family photo sessions are one of my favorite things! When I started in photography, family sessions were my first love. And I love them still! I love the creativity and interacting with a family to find the beauty, the love, and the connections. There is a point during the session when everyone relaxes and just has fun with each other. This is the magical point where you can see beyond the environment, the wardrobe, the hair and makeup. You just see love. What a gift! To be open and vulnerable and uncertain in front of a camera and then to find that spark of love is genuine and beautiful. I am honored to witness these moments over and over again with families.

Family Portraits for The Pospisils

Christy contacted me about doing a family session with her husband and new puppy. We met for a consultation and made a plan for the session, including location and wardrobe. We also talked about what she wanted to do with the family photos after the session. This conversation always helps me to think ahead for the actual session. I will plan for the types of posing and captures for the end products. Christy pointed out two areas in her home where she wanted to hang family portraits. One was in the entry way and one in the study. She later added another for her apartment in California where she works. She also mentioned that they had never had a wedding album printed. So, I had a few of her wedding images scanned and added them to her album with the 20th anniversary family photos from our session. The album is gorgeous and it is a beautiful reminder of their wedding and then a celebration of the twenty years they have spent together.

If you’re just getting into headshot photography, it’s easy to feel like you need everything to get started.

You don’t.

A solid light setup, a reliable camera, and a lens you can trust will take you a lot further than you think.

📸 For me, that looks like a Nikon Z7II mirrorless camera + a 70–200mm lens, paired with a simple lighting setup that keeps things consistent and professional.

It’s not about having the most gear — it’s about having the right setup and knowing how to use it.
