When planning a portrait session, search “portrait studio near me” and you’ll find photographers in your area.  Look at the photographer’s website to get a good idea of the style and types of photos that the photographer specializes in.  Although it seems like each portrait scenario is the same, they are usually quite different.  For example, photographing newborns is completely different than high school seniors.  And in the same way wedding photography is very different from a headshot session.  There are similar aspects and lighting, posing, and expression are always important factors.  However, the skills, tools, and equipment needed for each of these specialties can vary.  So find a portrait studio in your area that specializes in the type of photography that you need.  Make sure that they have lots of examples on their website of those images.  Then contact the photographer and plan a great session!

Headshots for Alex

Alex contacted me for an updated headshot.  She needed it pretty quickly.  So, we photographed her at my home studio and got some fantastic headshots.  She was able to choose a favorite headshot on the spot.  I edited and retouched her favorite photo and sent it to her in time to meet the deadline.  She loves her new headshot and I’m so glad that we were able to successfully accomplish the project!

When you’re just getting started, it’s easy to think you need all the gear before you can take on client work.

You don’t.

For in-office headshots, a solid setup really comes down to a few essentials:
✅ reliable lighting
✅ a strong lens
✅ a backdrop
✅ reflectors to help control light and keep skin tones consistent

That’s how I’m able to create clean, professional headshots—without being in a studio.

And for branding? That’s where I shift.

Instead of a backdrop, I’m using the client’s space—capturing environmental images that feel more natural, personal, and aligned with their business.

Same session, two different approaches—both intentional.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not about having more gear…
it’s about knowing how to use what you have.

Shooting outdoors doesn’t always mean “perfect lighting.” 👇🏻

One of the biggest challenges with natural light is inconsistency—
skin tones can shift depending on shade, surroundings, and even reflections (hello green grass 👀).

That’s why I use off-camera flash, even outside.

It helps create:
✅ consistent skin tones
✅ balanced lighting
✅ a cleaner, more polished final image

So instead of guessing what the light is doing…
I’m controlling it.
