How to plan your realtor headshots | Houston Headshot Photographer

How to plan your realtor headshots

For realtors, the professional headshot is the first step in the marketing process. All of your marketing materials (business cards, signs, websites, banners, etc.) require a professional headshot. So, let’s plan your realtor headshots.

First, find a professional photographer in your area that specializes in headshots. Yes, anyone can take a headshot and I’m sure that you have a fantastic selfie. However, a professional photographer will use lighting, posing, and professional equipment to create a high quality image that can be used on printed marketing materials. That selfie will not print well on your billboard or sign! And a professional who specializes in headshots will easily guide the session for exactly what you need.

Next, plan for the session with your photographer. Discuss location, background, and wardrobe. Who is your broker and what colors are prominent in the brand? Make sure the clothing and background coordinate with the brand colors. A simple studio background will allow for the headshot to be used for a variety of marketing materials.

Finally, relax and have fun during your headshot session! Talk to your photographer and just be yourself. Those relaxed smiles and poses will make the resulting images confident, warm, and welcoming.

Realtor headshots for Elia

Elia just got her real estate license in the state of Texas. She’s ready to start a new career and needed a headshot. Her broker is Keller Williams The Woodlands and the brand colors are mostly red and white. Elia was reviewing the business cards and showed me a few of her favorite designs. This discussion led to our choice of her grey sweater and her red sweater. The dark grey background will look great with the darker business card and her headshot will fit seamlessly into the template. She’s ready for marketing her new business. That beautiful sunlight filtering through the trees? It can actually make your job a little harder. 😂📸

When I`m photographing families or seniors in wooded locations, one of the first things I`m looking for is consistent, even lighting.

Those little patches of sunlight coming through the trees (also called dappled light) might look pretty in person, but they can create distracting bright spots across your subject`s face, skin, and clothing.

Here are a few things I keep in mind when shooting in wooded areas:

🌳 Look for solid shade. I want my subjects evenly lit rather than having random patches of harsh sunlight hitting different parts of their bodies.

☀️ Use backlighting to your advantage. When the light is right, I love positioning the sun behind my subjects to create that beautiful, soft glow around their hair and shoulders.

📸 Don`t forget your lens hood! Shooting toward the sun can introduce unwanted lens flare and reduce contrast. A lens hood can help control some of that stray light while still allowing you to create beautiful backlit portraits.

And remember, just because a location is beautiful doesn`t mean every spot within it has great lighting!

Learning to recognize good light is just as important as knowing your camera settings.

A little bit of flash can go a LONG way outdoors. 📸

When I’m photographing families or seniors outside, I’m not trying to overpower the natural light or make the photo look like it was taken with flash.

I just want a little extra light to soften those shadows, even out skin tones, and give me a more polished final image.

The key? Keep it subtle.

Your flash should work with the natural light—not fight against it. When you get that balance right, you still get the beautiful look of an outdoor session, just with a little more control over your subject’s lighting.

If you’re a newer photographer, start experimenting with adding a small amount of off-camera flash to your outdoor sessions. You might be surprised by how much of a difference it makes!

Start with one person’s outfit (Mom, I’m looking at you 😉) and build everyone else around it.

Of course, we’re going to get that classic photo where everyone is together, looking at the camera, and smiling. But that’s only one small part of a family session.

We’ll get the whole family together. Just the kids. Mom and Dad. Each parent with the kids. And plenty of different combinations along the way.

But we’ll also make room for the in-between moments.

The silly faces. The big laughs. The cuddles. The kids being kids. The moments when everyone forgets about the camera for a second and is simply enjoying being together.

I’ll guide you into poses and give you direction throughout your session, but we’re not chasing perfection. Sometimes a pose is just the starting point—and what happens immediately after it ends up being the photo you love most.

Because years from now, you won’t only want to remember what everyone looked like.

You’ll want to remember what being together felt like. 🤍
