Natural Headshots | Houston Headshot Photographer

Natural Headshots

The most important thing about a professional headshot is that it looks like you and represents you.  This might sound like a silly thing.  Of course, it will look like me, because it is me!  But what I mean is that you are relaxed and we create a natural headshot.  It is an image that when people see it, they know the real you.  Here are a few tips for helping your photographer create a natural headshot:

  1. Be prepared for your headshot session.  That means picking out your outfits ahead of time and making sure they fit and still look good.  If your photographer allows it, bring an extra outfit or shirt for an additional look.  For women, allow plenty of time for hair and makeup.
  2. Get rest.  Like any big day, be sure to have adequate rest before your headshot session.  Your photographer can Photoshop the eyes but everything about you will shine brighter with a good night’s sleep!
  3. Relax and have fun!  I know, it’s just a headshot.  But this is an image that will represent you for another year or so.  Chat with your photographer about why you are having a headshot done now and what you need it for.  Or just chat about what you had for breakfast.  I’ve been known to do a lot of chatting before we even get a few shots off.

Corporate Headshots for PGAL

PGAL is an architecture firm with an office location in Houston.  I have photographed headshots for them in the past.  This session was to photograph the rest of the office.  I love the natural headshots that we created.  Using both artificial and natural light, we created portraits in their break room that are natural with a pop of their signature color.  These headshots represent the company brand and are real.  The leadership also got a second headshot that shows a little more scene and personality.  PGAL’s website will be updated with the new headshots and leadership images.  A most professional way to introduce themselves to potential clients.

I’m gonna let you in on my secret… 👀

These are the camera settings I use as my starting point when I’m shooting during golden hour:

☀️ APERTURE
For one person: f/2.8–f/3.2
For families or groups: f/5.6

A wider aperture gives you that beautiful separation and soft background when you’re photographing one person. With a group, I stop down to help keep everyone in focus.

☀️ SHUTTER SPEED
I start around 1/160 sec—but if I have kids running, a couple moving around, or anything else with more movement, I’ll increase my shutter speed to keep everything sharp.

☀️ ISO
ISO 400 is my starting point, and then I adjust up or down depending on how much light I have.

The biggest thing to remember? These aren’t magic numbers you have to use every time.

Golden hour changes quickly, and your settings should change with it. Use these as a starting point, watch your light, and adjust for the people and movement in front of your camera.

So don’t wait for the “perfect” year for family portraits. Document the family you have right now—the missing teeth, growth spurts, changing personalities, and even the little bit of chaos that comes with it.

Because one day, getting everyone in the same place for a family photo might be the hardest part.
