Modern Headshots

For a lighter, more contemporary feel to your headshot, consider an outdoor headshot session.  The headshot session no longer needs to be confined to the office or a studio setting.  Many professionals are having headshot sessions outdoors or with an environmental feel.  Even though the setting is a little more relaxed, our wardrobe, posing, and lighting principles remain.  Wardrobe should be professional and match your role and industry.  We also consider posing.  This, too, should be professional.  Finally, a certified professional photographer will ensure that the lighting is appropriate for the setting and subject.  When discussing your next headshot session with your photographer, talk about the options for an outdoor session…it’s a lot of fun too!

Headshots for Hilary

Hilary is an emergency nurse practitioner.  She wanted an outdoor headshot session and I was thrilled!  We met for our session and she had several options for wardrobe.  First, we started with a vibrant pink blouse that looked great among the green trees.  Then we moved to the blue blazer and we absolutely loved it with the hints of blue in the two different backgrounds.  Finally, we ended with a plain black button down against the marble wall and we also got a few with her scrub top in this same location.  Hilary had a hard time choosing and narrowing the selections down to her favorites but I absolutely love the ones that she chose!

Shooting outdoors doesn’t always mean “perfect lighting.” 👇🏻

One of the biggest challenges with natural light is inconsistency—
skin tones can shift depending on shade, surroundings, and even reflections (hello green grass 👀).

That’s why I use off-camera flash, even outside.

It helps create:
✅ consistent skin tones
✅ balanced lighting
✅ a cleaner, more polished final image

So instead of guessing what the light is doing…
I’m controlling it.

You don’t need the most expensive gear to be a good photographer.

When I first started, I thought I needed everything—top-tier camera, expensive lighting, all of it.

The reality?

A solid camera and a good lens will take you a long way.

If you’re just starting out, keep it simple:
✨ A versatile zoom lens (24–70mm or 70–200mm)
✨ Gear you can rely on and learn inside and out

And when it comes to lighting—especially outdoors—don’t overinvest too early.

Wind happens. Gear gets knocked over. Things break.

Light is light.

Focus on learning how to use what you have before worrying about upgrading everything.
