Light and Bright Headshots

Environmental headshots are an alternative to the standard studio backdrop and lighting used for a more traditional headshot.  Environmental headshots can be taken in your office, outdoors, or at the local coffee shop.  When planning for your headshot session, start with your business brand, logo, and style.  Your industry and your role in that industry can play a part in your headshot.  The headshot should tell a story about you.  And the environment in the background can say a lot about you through the headshot.  Plan for the headshot beginning with your industry and role,  brand and logo.  Then discuss the background with your photographer for the best fit.  Finally, choose clothing that continues that story.  All of these pieces make the perfect headshot for you and your business.

Headshots for Liz

Liz is a family counselor.  She came to me asking about an environmental headshot that was a light and bright headshot.  She wanted to be friendly and approachable in her headshot.  As a family counselor, her headshot needed to represent her style and role.  I loved her crisp, white blouse with the light and airy backdrop.  Liz now has warm, friendly, beautiful headshots for her business.  They will welcome new clients with an outstretched arm.  Maker sure your headshot tells your story and invites people to learn more about you.  All my best, Liz, for continued success in your business.

When you’re just getting started, it’s easy to think you need all the gear before you can take on client work.

You don’t.

For in-office headshots, a solid setup really comes down to a few essentials:
✅ reliable lighting
✅ a strong lens
✅ a backdrop
✅ reflectors to help control light and keep skin tones consistent

That’s how I’m able to create clean, professional headshots—without being in a studio.

And for branding? That’s where I shift.

Instead of a backdrop, I’m using the client’s space—capturing environmental images that feel more natural, personal, and aligned with their business.

Same session, two different approaches—both intentional.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not about having more gear…
it’s about knowing how to use what you have.

Shooting outdoors doesn’t always mean “perfect lighting.” 👇🏻

One of the biggest challenges with natural light is inconsistency—
skin tones can shift depending on shade, surroundings, and even reflections (hello green grass 👀).

That’s why I use off-camera flash, even outside.

It helps create:
✅ consistent skin tones
✅ balanced lighting
✅ a cleaner, more polished final image

So instead of guessing what the light is doing…
I’m controlling it.
