Job Search 101: Polish Your Resume and Get a Headshot

“In recent studies, up to 90% of human resources people say they check out social media profiles, especially LinkedIn and Facebook, before inviting a candidate in for an interview. This means the wrong headshot can kill your chances of even talking on the phone stone-dead. Is your headshot killing your opportunities for job offers before you even get the opportunity to interview?” ~Martin Yate, CPC, author of Knock ’em Dead: Secrets & Strategies for Success in an Uncertain World

We live in a digital world full of pictures.  So the job search is one of the factors of life that has also been altered by the digital age.  If you are beginning a job search, you naturally think about updating the resume.  You’ll want to include all of the experience that you’ve had since your last job search.  You want it to be current.  The same is true for your headshot.  If recruiters are looking at your LinkedIn and Facebook profiles, they should see a professional representation of you.  Not the selfie from the weekend’s boating trip, as fun as that was.  LinkedIn is a professional network and your headshot should be professional.

Headshots for Laurie

Laurie requested a headshot session for her job search.  She needed an updated headshot.  We had such a great session – we chatted and talked about kids and college in between shots!  We are all connected in some way and I love that my job allows me to find connections with people.  Everyone is on a journey and our experiences reflect the ups, downs, trials, and successes.  Laurie’s dark blue suit is a perfect match for the blue-grey background and natural light setup.  We took a number of shots with other backgrounds, lighting, and wardrobe options.  She ultimately chose these final images for her headshots.  I love that she is relaxed, professional, and friendly for her new job search headshots.  All my best, Laurie, in whatever comes next for you.

But in all seriousness—photographers love a good piece of gear.

And it’s really easy to convince yourself that the next upgrade is what’s going to take your work to the next level.

Sometimes that’s true.

If a piece of equipment makes your workflow smoother, more efficient, or solves a real problem for you—it’s worth every penny.

But if it’s just shiny, new, and replacing something that already works… it can probably wait.

The goal isn’t to have more gear—it’s to have the right gear for how you actually shoot.

🔗 If you’re trying to figure out what’s actually worth investing in, I put together a Photographer Gear Guide that breaks it all down—link in bio.

🤔 Curious… what’s one piece of equipment you’ve bought that was 100% worth it?
A small snapshot of the teams I’ve worked with recently 📸👇🏻

Headshots are one of those things that are easy to put off… until you realize your photos no longer reflect where you are now.

Outdated images, inconsistent team photos, or a mix of styles across platforms can quietly take away from how your brand is perceived.

A headshot refresh doesn’t have to be complicated—it just needs to be intentional.

If your team’s photos haven’t been updated in a while, this is a good time to take a look at what you’re currently using.

Some of my favorite senior photos always include something personal.

Instruments, sports gear, pets, cars—these are the details that make your photos feel like you.

Senior sessions aren’t just about getting a few good pictures—they’re about capturing this season in a way that feels real and meaningful.

And with senior year right around the corner, now is the time to start thinking about it.

Spots tend to fill up quickly once the school year gets going, so planning ahead makes all the difference.

“Pick something you’d do for free…” It sounds simple—but building a career around it is anything but.

There’s a lot that goes into turning photography into something sustainable—learning your craft, understanding lighting, figuring out your gear, working with clients, and continuing to grow.

But if you’re willing to put in the time, it’s one of the most rewarding things you can do.

If you’re just getting started, I have a few free resources to help you figure out what actually matters (and what doesn’t).

🔗 You can grab them with the link in my bio.
At the end of the day, it’s not about the title—it’s about what the photos actually do for you.

For most teams, the hardest part isn’t getting the photos taken… it’s coordinating everything around it.

Schedules, availability, keeping the look consistent across everyone—it adds up quickly, and it’s usually why it gets pushed off.

That’s exactly why I created a Corporate Team Headshot Planner—to make the process simple, organized, and easy to execute from start to finish.
