How to plan clothes for family photos

As a Mom and a photographer, I know that the hardest part of preparing for family photos is getting everyone dressed.  I stress out over my own family’s wardrobe, so I get it!  But if you plan ahead, it’ll be easier.  First, think about where in your home the photos will hang.  Do you need a family photo over the fireplace, on the staircase, or perhaps another wall in the living space that needs a personal touch?  Consider the colors in this space – are there neutrals or is there a bold color?  If there is a bold color, you’ll want to be sure that your wardrobe coordinates.  Next, pick two or three coordinating colors and remember that jeans, black, and khakis are free because they go with just about everything.  Finally, start with the person with the fewest clothing options and then build the family outfits from there.  Usually, my daughter and I start the plan and then my husband and son can usually find a button down or polo shirt to coordinate.  Remember to set everything out down to the shoes so that there are no surprises on photo day!

The Barajas Family

The Barajas family was on-point with their Fall family wardrobe!  I absolutely love the colors and the coordination!  No one has on exactly the same outfit but the mustard and navy colors coordinate beautifully.  Even the jean jacket on the little one helps to pull the dark blue color and the jeans together for the family.  Layers and texture are always a great thing for pulling together an entire look!

This is why good branding photos feel different 👇🏻

A strong session isn’t just about showing up and taking a few pictures.

It’s about direction.
It’s about intention.
It’s about creating images you can actually use across your business.

The end result should feel aligned—like your photos finally match the level you’re operating at now.

But here’s the part most people skip…
Before you ever step in front of the camera, you need clarity on your brand.

✅ What do you want your brand to feel like?
✅ How do you want to show up?

That’s exactly why I created my Brand Personality Workbook—to help you define that first so your photos actually work for you.

📥 Grab it through the link in my bio, then let’s plan your session.
It’s funny… people assume I’m just showing up, taking photos, and moving on.

But in reality, I’m rooting for my clients long after the session is over.

Hoping they feel more confident.
Hoping they land the opportunity.
Hoping their photos help them show up the way they’ve been wanting to.

Because it’s never just about the pictures.

📩 If you’re ready for photos that actually support where you’re going, you can book through the link in my bio.
You don’t just get a few photos…

You get a full set of images you can actually use—
for your website, your content, your launches, and everything in between.

Because as a coach, you are your brand.
And the way you show up visually matters more than most people realize.

My goal isn’t just to take good photos—
it’s to help you feel confident, natural, and aligned in how you present yourself.

📩 If you’ve been putting off branding photos, this is your sign—link in bio to start planning.
Mid-session. Camera in hand. Client in front of me…
and suddenly my camera starts throwing error codes.

I turn it off. Pull the battery. Take the card out.
Put everything back in and hope it works again.

And then it happens again.

Three memory cards failed on me during that shoot.

After that, I switched to Sony Tough cards—and haven’t had an issue since.

It’s one of those things you don’t think about… until you’re in a high-pressure moment and your gear has to perform.

📥 If you’re a photographer and want a breakdown of the gear I actually use and trust, I’ve put together a guide—link in bio.

👇🏼 But I'm curious, what cards have been working for you?
