You know you need updated professional photos—but what exactly are you supposed to book?

A professional headshot? A branding session? And what’s really the difference?

It’s a question I hear often because there is some overlap between the two. Both can give you polished, professional images of yourself, but they’re designed to accomplish different goals.

The simplest way I explain it is this:

A headshot shows people who you are. Branding photography helps show people who you are, what you do, and what your brand feels like.

Neither option is better than the other. It’s about choosing the session that gives you the images you’ll actually use.

Let’s break down the difference between a headshot vs branding photography—and figure out which one makes the most sense for you.

What Is a Professional Headshot?

A professional headshot is primarily focused on you.

The composition is generally tighter, the setup is relatively simple, and the goal is to create a polished image that clearly represents you professionally.

You might use your headshot for:

  • LinkedIn
  • Your company website
  • An email signature
  • Professional directories
  • Speaker biographies
  • Press features
  • Business cards
  • Marketing materials

And professional doesn’t have to mean boring.

Your wardrobe, background, expression, and overall feel can still reflect your personality and profession. A financial advisor may want something polished and traditional, while a creative professional may choose a more colorful background and relaxed expression.

The goal is to create a professional first impression that still feels like you.

Who Is a Professional Headshot Best For?

Sometimes, a great headshot really is all you need.

A professional headshot session may be the right choice if:

  • Your LinkedIn photo is outdated
  • You’ve recently changed jobs or roles
  • Your appearance has changed
  • Your company needs an updated photo for its website
  • You’re speaking at an upcoming event
  • You need an image for a publication or professional directory
  • Your current headshot simply doesn’t represent you anymore

If your primary goal is to give people an updated, professional representation of you, a headshot is a great place to start.

What Is Branding Photography?

Branding photography goes several steps beyond the traditional headshot.

Instead of creating one primary professional image, we’re building a library of photos you can use throughout your business and marketing.

A branding session may include:

  • Professional headshots
  • Full-body portraits
  • Lifestyle images
  • Photos of you working
  • Behind-the-scenes imagery
  • Detail shots
  • Your office or workspace
  • Products, tools, or equipment you use
  • Multiple outfits
  • Different backgrounds or setups
  • Both horizontal and vertical compositions
  • A variety of expressions and moods

The specific shot list will look different for every person because the session should be built around your business and how you plan to use the photos.

A realtor doesn’t need the same branding gallery as a physician.

A consultant doesn’t need the same images as a boutique owner.

That’s the point.

Your branding photos should visually support the story you’re already telling about your business.

Who Is a Branding Session Best For?

Branding photography is especially valuable for professionals who are actively marketing themselves or their businesses.

That might include:

  • Business owners
  • Entrepreneurs
  • Realtors
  • Consultants
  • Coaches
  • Speakers
  • Authors
  • Creative professionals
  • Executives building a personal brand
  • Anyone regularly creating content for their business

There’s also one very easy way to know you might be ready for branding photos:

You’re constantly thinking, “I don’t have a good photo to use for this.”

You write a social media post and don’t have an image.

Your website needs a new banner.

Someone asks for a photo for a speaking engagement.

You’re launching a new service and realize you’re using the same headshot you’ve posted 25 times already.

That’s the problem a branding session is designed to solve.

Instead of scrambling for an image every time you need one, you have a collection of intentional, professional photos ready to go.

Headshot vs Branding Photography: What’s the Difference?

There is definitely some overlap between the two, but the biggest difference comes down to purpose and variety.

Professional HeadshotBranding Photography
Primary GoalProfessional representationVisual brand storytelling
ImagesSmaller selectionLarger image library
WardrobeLimited looksMultiple looks
CompositionPrimarily headshotsHeadshots, full-body, lifestyle & detail images
Locations/SetupsUsually one primary setupPotential for multiple setups or environments
Best UsesLinkedIn, bios, directories & company websitesWebsites, social media, marketing & content creation
PlanningMore straightforwardPlanned around your brand and content needs

One isn’t more professional than the other.

They’re simply solving different problems.

What If You Need Both?

This is where a branding session can be particularly valuable.

You don’t necessarily have to choose between having a great professional headshot and having branding photos.

A branding session can give you both.

For example, a business owner might need:

  • A polished LinkedIn headshot
  • An approachable photo for their About page
  • Full-body portraits
  • Photos working at a desk
  • Images interacting with clients
  • More casual personality-driven photos
  • Horizontal images for website banners
  • Vertical images for social media
  • Photos for upcoming marketing campaigns

We can capture the polished professional headshot and build the larger visual library around it.

That’s why I like to start by understanding what you actually need rather than simply deciding how many photos you want.

Basic vs. Premium Branding Sessions

Because not every business needs the same amount of content, I offer two branding session options.

Basic Branding Session

My Basic Branding Session is a great option when you need a focused refresh without creating an extensive gallery.

It includes professional hair and makeup, three looks, nine final images, and up to 1.5 hours of photography.

This can work beautifully if you’re updating your website, refreshing your social profiles, or simply need a smaller collection of versatile professional images.

Premium Branding Session

My Premium Branding Session gives us more room to create variety.

It includes professional hair and makeup, four looks, 12 final images, and up to two hours of photography, along with a branding video.

This option works particularly well when you’re actively creating content, refreshing multiple areas of your marketing, or want a broader range of images and looks to pull from.

The goal isn’t automatically to choose the larger package.

It’s to determine how much content you actually need and where you’re going to use it.

The Question I Ask Before Choosing a Session

If you’re stuck between booking a professional headshot or a branding session, don’t start by asking which package sounds better.

Instead, ask yourself:

Where will I need photos to show up over the next 6–12 months?

Start making a list.

Your website, LinkedIn, Instagram, email marketing, speaking engagements, advertising, press features, proposals and presentations, marketing materials? The list is endless.

If you primarily need one strong image across a handful of professional platforms, a headshot session may be exactly what you need.

But if that list keeps growing—and you need different types of images for different situations—a branding session is probably going to serve you much better.

Thinking about usage first makes it much easier to determine what kind of session will give you the most value.

Headshot vs Branding Photography: Which Should You Choose?

Here’s the simplest way to make the decision:

Choose a professional headshot if:
You primarily need an updated, polished image of yourself for professional use.

Choose branding photography if:
You need a variety of images that communicate your personality, expertise, business, and overall brand.

Consider a branding session if you need both:
We can capture your professional headshot while also creating the larger collection of images you need for your marketing.

Ultimately, the goal isn’t to book the biggest session or walk away with the most photos.

It’s to create photos you’ll actually use.

Still Not Sure Which Session You Need?

You don’t have to figure it out before reaching out.

If you know your current photos aren’t working anymore but aren’t sure whether you need an updated headshot or a full branding session, that’s exactly what we can discuss during a consultation.

We’ll talk about your business, what you already have, where you need new images, and what you’re hoping your photos will accomplish.

From there, we can determine which type of session makes the most sense for you.

Capture One, if you’re looking for someone to sponsor… I’m your girl. 😉📸

But seriously—if you’re a headshot or portrait photographer and you haven’t tried shooting tethered yet, let me introduce you to one of my favorite workflow upgrades.

Tethering simply means connecting your camera to a computer so your images appear on a larger screen as you shoot. I use a wired connection straight into Capture One, which makes it easy to review images during the session, catch the little details I might miss on the back of my camera, and favorite the strongest shots as I go.

And when I’m finished? My selects are already organized, so I can transfer everything to my main computer at home and jump into editing without sorting through the entire session all over again.

I used to tether wirelessly, but switching to a wired setup has made the process much more reliable and seamless for me.

It’s one of those small workflow changes that makes a BIG difference—especially when you photograph a lot of headshots.

And if you’re just getting started in photography—or looking for ways to improve your setup, lighting, posing, and workflow—I have a whole collection of free resources for photographers waiting for you at the link in my bio. 📸

Photographers, are you shooting tethered yet? 👇🏻
Family photos with a 4-year-old? You just have to roll with it. 😂🤍

Little kids aren’t going to stand perfectly still, follow every direction, and smile on command—and I don’t expect them to!

I’d much rather meet them where they are. We’ll play, move around, be silly, take little breaks when we need them, and work toward those sweet moments in between.

That’s part of why I love family sessions so much. The goal isn’t perfectly behaved kids or a picture-perfect hour. It’s capturing your family as they are right now.

And yes, we’ll still get that beautiful everyone-looking-at-the-camera photo for the frame. 😉 But sometimes the personality-filled moments end up being the favorites.

🍂 I still have a few fall family portrait dates available! Head to the link in my bio to reserve your session.
Honestly… a little bit of everything. 📸

From professional headshots and personal branding to senior portraits and family sessions, I love creating photos that help people and businesses tell their story.

And there’s plenty more I can help with, too—large team group composites, in-office headshots for teams with different schedules, acting and modeling headshots, office branding, and more.

Basically, if you need photos for yourself, your family, or your business, let’s talk about what you have in mind. I’ll help you figure out the best way to make it happen.

Money may not buy happiness, but having photos of your family to look back on years from now? That’s pretty priceless. 🤍

Fall family portrait season is here, and I have a few weekend dates still available (spots are filling fast!) 👇🏻

September 20
October 3, 10, & 17
November 7 & 15

If you’ve been meaning to update the family photos, document this season, or get those holiday card photos checked off your list, this is your sign to get on the calendar.

And once you book, I’ll make sure you’re not left wondering what to wear, where we’re going, what to bring, or what to expect. My Family Session Welcome Guide walks you through everything you need to know to feel prepared for your session. (linked in my bio)

📸 Ready to make some memories worth keeping? Grab your date through the link in my bio.
I’m gonna let you in on my secret… 👀

These are the camera settings I use as my starting point when I’m shooting during golden hour:

☀️ APERTURE
For one person: f/2.8–f/3.2
For families or groups: f/5.6

A wider aperture gives you that beautiful separation and soft background when you’re photographing one person. With a group, I stop down to help keep everyone in focus.

☀️ SHUTTER SPEED
I start around 1/160 sec—but if I have kids running, a couple moving around, or anything else with more movement, I’ll increase my shutter speed to keep everything sharp.

☀️ ISO
ISO 400 is my starting point, and then I adjust up or down depending on how much light I have.

The biggest thing to remember? These aren’t magic numbers you have to use every time.

Golden hour changes quickly, and your settings should change with it. Use these as a starting point, watch your light, and adjust for the people and movement in front of your camera.

And if you’re building your photography kit and wondering what gear is actually worth investing in, I put together my Photographer’s Gear Guide with the cameras, lenses, lighting, and equipment I use in my own business.
