Hair and Makeup for Headshots

Hair and makeup services are an optional add-on for any of my headshot and corporate sessions.  Many clients choose to have hair and makeup for headshots.  It’s an easy step to ensure that hair and makeup are camera-ready.  Here are a few reasons to add hair and makeup to your headshot session:

  1. SHINE: the number one reason for professional makeup is that it reduces shine on the face.  The matte airbrush makeup is perfect for reducing shine and making the skin look flawless.  I can instantly tell the difference when someone has professional makeup on in the images.
  2. EYES: professional makeup seems to make the eyes pop for me.  With the addition of lashes, the eyes appear bigger and have more definition.  The eyes are the central focus for photographers – we constantly analyze the amount and direction of light hitting the eyes.  They are also the focus point for the entire image.
  3.  PROFESSIONAL: for the same reason that we recommend a professional headshot instead of s selfie, we recommend professional hair and makeup.  It’s done by a professional who knows the colors, the styling, and the proper application for a business headshot.

Environmental Headshots for Clare

Clare contacted me about some environmental headshots.  Her company was providing the standard studio headshot but she wanted something a little different!  Excellent!!  Roxana provided hair and makeup services at Clare’s home and then we met afterwards for the headshot session.  I’ve worked with Roxana for many years and I know that she will create a beautiful look for each of my clients depending on their style and taste.  She also makes sure that the look is appropriate for a business headshot.  Clare and I had a great time walking around and finding spots for her headshots.  She brought a couple of different outfits and we ended up with several looks for her final selections.  Thanks Clare and Roxana for a fantastic session!

If you’re just starting a photography business… you need to watch this.

I recently showed up to a headshot session at an office building with all my gear—ready to go—and security wouldn’t let me in.

Not because anything was wrong… but because there was a miscommunication, and I didn’t have a certificate of insurance on file with the building.

It’s one of those things you don’t think about when you’re first starting out—but it matters.

As you grow and start booking more corporate or on-location sessions, these small admin details become part of the job.

Clear communication with your client (or their admin team) ahead of time can save you a lot of stress on shoot day.

And it’s really easy to convince yourself that the next upgrade is what’s going to take your work to the next level.

Sometimes that’s true.

If a piece of equipment makes your workflow smoother, more efficient, or solves a real problem for you—it’s worth every penny.

But if it’s just shiny, new, and replacing something that already works… it can probably wait.

The goal isn’t to have more gear—it’s to have the right gear for how you actually shoot.
