Fun Senior Portraits

High school senior portraits are so much fun!  We get to play with the sun, light, shadows, posing, wardrobe, props, and all of the things.  Before the session, we will have chatted over Zoom to get to know each other.  {I like to meet you before the day of the session so that on session day we can get straight to the fun part!}  First, we discuss location: do you like nature with trees and greenery?  Do you like a more urban setting with buildings for texture and a little grunge?  What about graffiti for a vibrant, colorful background?  Or are you a little more country?  Next, we’ll talk about wardrobe.  I like to start with the most formal thing you’ve got (dress, suit, blazer, etc.) and progress to more casual and sometimes we end up in jeans and a hoodie (it’s okay, Mom, that’s what you’ll remember).  Finally, you tell me about your hobbies and interests.  What are you into (sports, music, drama, video games)?  I’d love to incorporate these things into your session to make it truly personalized and custom for you!

Sessions with Gretchen and Molly

Gretchen and her family met me for a family/senior session at the park.  We had brothers, sisters, Mom, Dad, grandparents…the whole gang!  After we did most of the family portraits, Gretchen and I got to have fun and get some fantastic senior portraits.  I just love the warmth and energy in her portraits!  Molly needed some senior portraits for her college sorority applications.  We had a great time getting her closeup and full body shots for that.  She’s headed to my alma mater, Baylor University and I can’t wait to see her next chapter!

I’m gonna let you in on my secret… 👀

These are the camera settings I use as my starting point when I’m shooting during golden hour:

☀️ APERTURE
For one person: f/2.8–f/3.2
For families or groups: f/5.6

A wider aperture gives you that beautiful separation and soft background when you’re photographing one person. With a group, I stop down to help keep everyone in focus.

☀️ SHUTTER SPEED
I start around 1/160 sec—but if I have kids running, a couple moving around, or anything else with more movement, I’ll increase my shutter speed to keep everything sharp.

☀️ ISO
ISO 400 is my starting point, and then I adjust up or down depending on how much light I have.

The biggest thing to remember? These aren’t magic numbers you have to use every time.

Golden hour changes quickly, and your settings should change with it. Use these as a starting point, watch your light, and adjust for the people and movement in front of your camera.
