Best Headshot Photographer

The best headshot photographer is one that produces the kind of headshot that you’re looking for.  Not sure what you’re looking for?  Take a look at photographers’ websites to get an idea of style.  Not all photographers specialize in headshots!  Headshot photographers need lighting equipment and expertise, posing, and other tips specific to headshots.  Look around to ensure that you find the right match for you!  I prefer to know my clients’ needs for the headshot.  What will you be using it for (social media, company website, proposals, articles, awards, etc.)?  When did you last have a headshot and how did you feel about the experience?  What is prompting you to get a headshot done now?  We work together to create something that is crafted especially for them.

What Should a Headshot Look Like?

Depending on your industry and position, your headshot may not look like your neighbor’s and that’s okay!  The accounting and financial services industries generally prefer to have more formal headshots.  Realtors like to have professional but very friendly headshots.  Physicians also need professional yet friendly headshots.  Many people now are opting for an outdoor headshot – it’s still a professional look but a little more relaxed and casual than the regular studio shot.  Everything from location to wardrobe, pose, and expression affect your final headshot.  I will work with you to identify the best look for you so that you’re confident in posting that headshot on your website, social media, and other marketing materials.

Here are 5 mistakes I see all the time:

1️⃣ Lighting from below
Creates unflattering shadows. Keep your light slightly above eye level.

2️⃣ Too much (or too harsh) light
Softer, controlled light will always look more professional.

3️⃣ No direction to your light
Flat lighting = flat images. You need some angle to create depth.

4️⃣ Mixing multiple light sources
This is how you end up with weird color and inconsistent tones.

5️⃣ Ignoring catchlights
Small detail, big impact—this is what brings life to your subject’s eyes.

Lighting doesn’t need to be complicated… it just needs to be intentional.
