Actress and Model Headshots

Headshots for actors, actresses, and models are a little different than business headshots. Lighting and equipment are similar but the posing and cropping of the images are not. Talent directors want to see an actor’s face first and foremost. So a tighter headshot is required for actors and sometimes not even the top of the hair is included in the shot. The headshot must include all of the face and down to the collar bones. An actor headshot session should also include some variety in expression. It’s probably best to have two or three final images for your headshots. A happy smiling photo is necessary but a more serious look is also great to have in your back pocket. Headshots for Zy

Zy’s mom contacted me about actor headshots for her 5-year-old daughter. I was excited!! And she was an absolute pro. She came prepared with several outfits and after warming up a bit, Zy let her personality shine through! I asked her to turn her chin one way and then the other and she followed directions better than some adults. True story. I had to get her cute hair in the shots as well because the hair styling made that look. At the very end of the session, we did some natural light headshots and a more serious expression. She nailed it. The serious expressions at the beginning of the session were more playful and silly. But the ones at the end were perfect and I just love her final image with that serious expression.

UPDATE: Zy’s mom contacted me after the showcase. Zy was the only 5-year-old selected to go to California next year for IPOP. How exciting! She was so glad to have those 8×10 headshots in her hand just before leaving. I’m so glad we got them done!

A little bit of flash can go a LONG way outdoors. 📸

When I’m photographing families or seniors outside, I’m not trying to overpower the natural light or make the photo look like it was taken with flash.

I just want a little extra light to soften those shadows, even out skin tones, and give me a more polished final image.

The key? Keep it subtle.

Your flash should work with the natural light—not fight against it. When you get that balance right, you still get the beautiful look of an outdoor session, just with a little more control over your subject’s lighting.

If you’re a newer photographer, start experimenting with adding a small amount of off-camera flash to your outdoor sessions. You might be surprised by how much of a difference it makes!

Start with one person’s outfit (Mom, I’m looking at you 😉) and build everyone else around it.

The best family photos aren’t always the perfectly posed ones. 🤍

Of course, we’re going to get that classic photo where everyone is together, looking at the camera, and smiling. But that’s only one small part of a family session.

We’ll get the whole family together. Just the kids. Mom and Dad. Each parent with the kids. And plenty of different combinations along the way.

But we’ll also make room for the in-between moments.

The silly faces. The big laughs. The cuddles. The kids being kids. The moments when everyone forgets about the camera for a second and is simply enjoying being together.

I’ll guide you into poses and give you direction throughout your session, but we’re not chasing perfection. Sometimes a pose is just the starting point—and what happens immediately after it ends up being the photo you love most.

Because years from now, you won’t only want to remember what everyone looked like.

You’ll want to remember what being together felt like. 🤍
