What to wear for family pictures outside

Figuring out what to wear is probably the hardest part of the family photo session! But with a little help from your photographer, it can be super easy and stress-free! Here are some things that I recommend for families getting ready for a family session.

Take a look in everyone’s closets and see what is currently available. Sometimes a piece or two will inspire you for the entire family. If one person has fewer choices in terms of wardrobe, start with that person. The boys are usually easiest to put in a coordinating polo or button-down.
Choose a color scheme. We don’t want everyone to match but rather to coordinate. Pick two or three colors that compliment each other and build wardrobe from those colors. Jeans and khaki pants are freebies! And consider where we will be – usually in a park or other natural setting. There are lots of browns and greens. So shades of blue always look great!
Layer and mix it up. Use the main color in tops and bottoms and accessory pieces. What we don’t want is everyone in purple shirts! I love purple but it’s better to mix it up a bit.

The Pennington Family

The Pennington family was beautifully coordinated without matching! They wore a mixture of dark blues and cream with a pop of yellow. We had a great session and now their family portraits hang on the walls of their home. Mom is super excited about sending gift prints to the grandparents and extended family.
