What should a headshot look like?
First, let me say that there are no set standards for headshots. It’s not like a passport photo where the head should take up X percentage of the frame and the eyes should be one-third of the way down the image, etc. Headshots come in all shapes and sizes and colors and exposures, just like us! And that’s a beautiful thing. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when you are preparing for a headshot session. First, find a professional photographer. A certified professional photographer will have the proven technical skills and abilities to provide what you need in a headshot. Next, talk to your photographer about location, background, wardrobe, and styling. Finally, keep in mind that a typical headshot will be about from the chest and up. Cropping the image is also best left to a professional.

Sometimes I have clients that know exactly what their headshot needs to look like. Usually it’s because the company has a current set of headshots for their staff and the newest person has to create a headshot that matches.
