Celebrating Engagement and Family

Milestones are an important part of life.  Getting engaged is a beautiful memory and one that is easily captured to remember for generations.  The love is new and fresh.  It is beautiful and young and flows from every ounce of your being.  Our memories fade but photographs will last a lifetime.  Be sure to preserve your life’s most precious memories in tangible form.  Put them on the walls or in an heirloom album where you and your family can enjoy them for years.

Family Photos

Rhonda contacted me months ago about celebrating her engagement and her family.  After a few reschedules due to weather, we finally made it to our session day!  The day started a little bit cloudy but then the sun appeared and it was a beautiful day for a family portrait session.  Sometimes you find new and unexpected things in a very common, ordinary place.  This first image has a tree that I’ve walked by a hundred times.  Before our session on this day, I had never SEEN the tree like this.  It is now one of my favorite images.  The sun shining down on the two of them, small yet entangled in love and rooted to the ground and to each other.

Shooting outdoors doesn’t always mean “perfect lighting.” 👇🏻

One of the biggest challenges with natural light is inconsistency—
skin tones can shift depending on shade, surroundings, and even reflections (hello green grass 👀).

That’s why I use off-camera flash, even outside.

It helps create:
✅ consistent skin tones
✅ balanced lighting
✅ a cleaner, more polished final image

So instead of guessing what the light is doing…
I’m controlling it.

You don’t need the most expensive gear to be a good photographer.

When I first started, I thought I needed everything—top-tier camera, expensive lighting, all of it.

The reality?

A solid camera and a good lens will take you a long way.

If you’re just starting out, keep it simple:
✨ A versatile zoom lens (24–70mm or 70–200mm)
✨ Gear you can rely on and learn inside and out

And when it comes to lighting—especially outdoors—don’t overinvest too early.

Wind happens. Gear gets knocked over. Things break.

Light is light.

Focus on learning how to use what you have before worrying about upgrading everything.
