Getting ready for your headshot session

As a Houston headshot photographer, I know that it takes some preparation for your headshot session.  All of my clients receive a welcome magazine to help with this preparation.  I’m here to help in any way that I can to ensure that your headshot session goes smoothly and successfully.

Here are a few things to consider when preparing for your headshot session:

  1. Location: First, decide on a location.  The session can take place at your office, my home studio, or at an outdoor location (park, downtown, urban area) depending on your brand and the type of headshot that you need.  If the session will take place outside, the time of day will be taken into consideration and we will need to adjust accordingly.
  2. Background: this is also an important consideration.  If you are taking a headshot for your website, consider the colors and background of your website.  If your website has a white background, I personally like to have a white background for the headshot so that the emphasis is on the person and not on a dark square on the website.  Many people prefer a white background for LinkedIn also.  Do you want a studio background (white, black, grey)?  Or Do you want an environmental portrait?  An environmental portrait is great for those who benefit from showing an office or environment to potential clients and customers.  It gives them a sense of the space and puts you into context with the company.
  3. What to wear: Your specific business and style should be reflected in what you wear for your headshot.
    1. Women: Many professional women wear a black jacket with blouse underneath.  Solid colors are best.  Jewelry is great – just make sure it doesn’t overpower the look.  I always recommend a professional hair and makeup artist.  If doing your own makeup, apply a little bit more than you normally would wear.
    2. Men: For men wearing a suit jacket, button down, and tie, please try on the combination a week prior to your headshot session and make sure that it fits and buttons.
    3. Glasses: If you wear glasses all the time, wear them for your headshot session.  I have some tricks to minimize glare.

Hopefully these tips will help in your preparation for the headshot session.  I always tell clients to bring a couple of options and we can see what works best.

Global Edge Consultants

I did a headshot session for Global Edge Consultants several years ago.  As they prepare for the launch of their new website, Global Edge needed new headshots.  I set up my background and lighting equipment in the office conference room and got headshots for about 20 people – some new and some that I knew from the original shoot.  These headshots will go on the website and individuals can use them for social media sites like LinkedIn.  Many companies now like their employees to have a professional presence on LinkedIn because of the business connections that it provides.  You never know when someone will need your company’s services.

🚫 Let’s talk wardrobe no-nos for headshots.

I want you to look polished, confident, and distraction-free in your photos—and sometimes that means skipping certain outfit choices.

For men:

❌ No undershirts peeking through

❌ If you’re wearing a tie, make sure your shirt buttons all the way up

❌ If it doesn’t, we’re ditching the tie

For women:

❌ Skip the sleeveless tops—your arms will compete with your face for attention

✅ A sleeve (even short) helps keep the focus where it belongs—on YOU

The goal? A clean, intentional look that draws people in and keeps their attention right where it should be—your face.

📸 Save this before your session so you can show up ready and confident.

Let's talk... ⬇️

If your headshot isn’t working on your website, LinkedIn, or social media...

👉🏻 it’s probably not the image.

👉🏻 it’s the crop.

Yep, even the most beautiful photo can fall flat if it’s not framed for the platform it’s on.

Here are 3 common cropping mistakes I see all the time (and how to fix them):

1️⃣ Too Close – When there’s no breathing room, the image feels cramped and overly intense.

2️⃣ Too Far – If we can’t clearly see your face, we lose the connection instantly.

3️⃣ Wrong Shape for the Platform – That rectangle you uploaded to LinkedIn? It just became a circle... and cut off half your head.

✨ The fix? Intentional cropping before you upload—so your headshot looks polished, professional, and approachable everywhere.

Want a headshot that works across all platforms? Let’s create one that does just that.

Do you wear glasses all the time? Then they should absolutely be in your headshot.

Because here’s the thing—your headshot should look like you.

If you wear them only sometimes, it’s up to you. But if they’re part of your everyday look, don’t leave them out just because you’re worried about glare.

There are plenty of ways I can minimize reflection—and yes, I’ve got a few creative tricks up my sleeve if needed. 😉

Let’s keep your session real, honest, and true to how you actually show up in the world.
