“Should I smile for a professional headshot?”
It’s one of the questions I hear most often when someone steps in front of my camera for a professional headshot.
My answer is almost always yes.
A professional headshot is more than a record of what you look like. It’s often your first opportunity to make a connection with another person—whether that’s a potential client, patient, employer, colleague, or customer.
And your expression plays a big role in that first impression.
The goal isn’t necessarily to have the biggest smile possible. It’s to find an expression that feels genuine, communicates the right message, and makes sense for how and where your headshot will be used.

Why You Should Smile for a Professional Headshot
Think about where your professional headshot appears.
It might be on LinkedIn, your company website, an About page, a speaking profile, marketing materials, or even next to your contact information.
In many of those situations, someone is seeing your face before they ever meet you.
A natural smile can immediately make you appear more approachable and welcoming. For professionals who work directly with other people—physicians, attorneys, real estate agents, financial advisors, consultants, sales professionals, and countless others—that connection matters.
Your headshot should make someone feel comfortable taking the next step toward working with you.
A Smile Can Help Build Trust
A genuine smile communicates warmth.
Without saying anything, it can help convey:
- Approachability
- Friendliness
- Confidence
- Openness
- Trustworthiness
That doesn’t mean your headshot needs to feel overly casual. You can look polished, capable, and authoritative while still looking like someone another person would feel comfortable talking to.
Professional and approachable aren’t opposites.
In fact, some of the strongest headshots communicate both.
Confidence Doesn’t Require a Serious Expression
There’s a common assumption that a serious expression looks more professional.
Sometimes it can.
But looking serious doesn’t automatically make you look more competent—and smiling doesn’t automatically make you look less authoritative.
A relaxed smile combined with confident posture can communicate something incredibly valuable:
I know what I’m doing, and I’m someone you’ll feel comfortable working with.
For many professionals, that’s much more effective than trying to look overly serious or intimidating.
Genuine Smiles Photograph Differently
There’s also a noticeable difference between a smile that feels natural and one that’s being held for the camera.
When someone is forcing a smile, you can often see tension throughout the face. The mouth may be smiling while the eyes aren’t, or the cheeks and jaw may start to look stiff.
That’s why I don’t want someone standing in front of my camera holding the exact same smile for an entire session.
Instead, we’ll move between expressions.
We’ll talk. I’ll give you direction. We’ll reset when needed. Sometimes I’ll get you laughing.
Those little moments help create expressions that feel much more like you.
And very often, one of my favorite images comes from the moment between the poses.

How Big Should Your Smile Be?
This is where there isn’t one universal answer.
Your expression should make sense for your personality, profession, brand, and the way you intend to use the photograph.
The Big, Energetic Smile
A bigger smile can work beautifully for professionals whose brands are particularly energetic, personable, or customer-facing.
Think:
- Realtors
- Speakers
- Coaches
- Teachers
- Sales professionals
- Other highly client-facing roles
It can communicate enthusiasm, energy, and approachability.
The Soft Smile
A softer smile can create a polished, confident look while still maintaining warmth.
This can work particularly well for:
- Physicians
- Attorneys
- Executives
- Consultants
- Financial professionals
The result feels professional without becoming stern or unapproachable.
The No-Smile Expression
There are situations where a neutral expression makes sense, too.
Actors, authors, creatives, and executives may all have reasons for needing a more serious image.
The important distinction is serious versus stern.
Even without a smile, I want the face to remain relaxed and intentional rather than tense.
Why I Recommend Multiple Expressions for Executives
C-suite executives are one of the few groups where I specifically recommend having both smiling and more neutral options available.
Imagine a CEO has a beautiful headshot with a huge, teeth-showing smile.
It’s perfect for a company announcement, LinkedIn profile, conference biography, or positive press feature.
But now imagine that same photo appearing next to an announcement about layoffs, a company crisis, or another difficult piece of news.
Suddenly, the expression doesn’t match the message.
That’s why variety is especially valuable for executives.
I often recommend capturing a warm smile along with a softer smile or relaxed neutral expression. That gives the company options depending on the context in which the photograph will appear.
Your Smile Changes More Than Your Mouth
One reason smiling photographs so well is that it changes the entire face.
A natural smile can:
- Lift the cheeks
- Brighten the eyes
- Relax tension in the jaw
- Soften the overall expression
- Create more natural energy
That’s also why simply telling someone to “smile” isn’t always enough.
The goal isn’t just to move your mouth into the correct position. It’s to create an expression that feels natural throughout your face.

The Photographer Plays a Role in Your Expression
If you’re thinking, That’s great, but I hate having my picture taken, you’re certainly not alone.
You aren’t expected to walk into a headshot session already knowing exactly how to pose or how to produce the perfect expression on command.
That’s part of my job.
Throughout a session, I’m watching the small details. I’ll guide your posture, expression, positioning, and even when you need to relax your face for a moment.
I’ll also show you images as we go.
That allows us to see what’s working, make small adjustments, and create a variety of expressions rather than hoping we got the right one at the end.
A comfortable client almost always photographs better than someone who’s concentrating on performing the “perfect” smile.
One Headshot Doesn’t Have to Do Every Job
Another reason I like capturing multiple expressions is that your professional headshot may have several different jobs.
A warm, approachable smile might be perfect for LinkedIn or your company’s About page.
A bigger, more energetic expression might work beautifully for social media, marketing, or a speaking engagement.
A softer smile or neutral expression may be more appropriate for a press kit, publication, or executive communication.
You can maintain a consistent personal brand while still having enough variety to choose the photograph that fits the situation.
So, Should You Smile for a Professional Headshot?
For most people, yes.
But the better question isn’t simply whether you should smile.
It’s what do you want someone to feel when they see your headshot?
Do you want to appear warm and approachable? Confident and composed? Energetic and personable? Calm and authoritative?
Your expression should support that message.
A professional headshot isn’t just about looking good. It’s about communicating something about who you are before you’ve had the opportunity to say a word.
So don’t worry about creating the “perfect” smile.
We’ll find the expression that feels like you—and make sure you leave with enough variety to choose the right headshot for wherever your professional life takes you.
