Brian Domitrovic holds a Ph.D. in history from Harvard University, where he also did graduate work in the economics department. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Columbia University, studying history and mathematics. An associate professor and chairman of the department of history at Sam Houston State University, he has written for numerous scholarly and popular publications. He is the author of Econoclasts: the Rebels Who Sparked the Supply-Side Revolution and Restored American Prosperity. Domitrovic writes a weekly column at Forbes.com under the byline Past & Present. His blog is Supply-Side Economics Today.

Brian contacted me about a headshot because I had done a headshot for his colleage Wesley Phelps. Brian’s book with The Penguin Press will be out in the fall and they needed a headshot for the book cover. I am so thrilled! I can’t wait to buy the book when it comes out!

Let’s talk about men’s ties in headshots 👇🏻

It’s one of the most common questions I get before a headshot:
“Should I wear the red one… or the blue one?”

The truth is, your tie isn’t about preference—it’s about how it looks on camera.

What works best:
✅ Solid colors or subtle patterns
✅ Navy, burgundy, or charcoal tones
✅ A clean, standard width
✅ A slight texture (not too shiny, not too flat)

What to avoid:
❌ Loud prints
❌ Large patterns
❌ Anything that pulls attention away from your face

And one thing most people don’t think about…
👉🏻 your tie can also reflect your brand or company colors

The goal isn’t to stand out—it’s to look polished, confident, and professional.

What started as “just headshots”… turned into a full library of content.

Natalie and her husband, Rich, came to me as they were launching their new practice, Comprehensive Medical Specialists of Texas. Initially, they were looking for updated headshots and a group photo.

But as we started planning, we expanded the vision—creating not only individual headshots, but multiple group images and photos of their office space.
