Iconic Trends in Senior Portraits

As we navigate through the season of capturing timeless memories for the class of 2024, it’s more important than ever to stay abreast of the top trends in senior portraits. This year, themes of individuality shine through, with a strong focus on authentic expression, the connection between seniors and their beloved pets or significant relationships, and the enchanting embrace of the great outdoors. Here are the three top trends in senior portraits that are capturing the hearts and imaginations of the class of 2024.

Trend #1: Authentic Expression and Themed Photoshoots

The class of 2024 is all about showcasing their true selves, with a significant lean towards authentic expression combined with themed photoshoots. Seniors are opting for sessions that reflect their hobbies, passions, and dreams, allowing their personalities to take center stage. From fantasy and vintage themes to career aspirations and personal interests, these photoshoots are as unique as the individuals themselves. This trend moves away from traditional posed shots, favoring candid moments where seniors are engaged in activities they love, surrounded by elements that tell their story, making each session distinct and deeply personal.

Trend #2: Incorporating Pets and Important Personal Relationships

A senior portrait trend that’s truly capturing the essence of personal connection is the incorporation of pets and significant relationships into senior portraits. Recognizing the profound impact that these bonds have on their lives, seniors are choosing to include family members, best friends, or their cherished pets in their photos. This approach not only adds a layer of depth and emotion to the portraits but also celebrates the relationships that have shaped their journey to adulthood. These sessions create a space for memorable moments to unfold, capturing the love and camaraderie that define these pivotal years.

Trend #3: Nature and Outdoor Settings

The allure of natural light and the beauty of outdoor settings continue to be a dominant trend in senior portraits. Whether it’s a serene park, a vibrant cityscape, or a quiet rural setting, the class of 2024 is stepping outside the studio to embrace the great outdoors. These backdrops provide a stunning canvas that complements the senior’s style and personality, from the tranquility of nature reflecting a serene disposition to the bustling energy of urban environments mirroring their dynamic spirit. Outdoor sessions offer endless possibilities for creativity, allowing seniors to explore settings that resonate with their personal stories.

Embracing These Trends

For photographers and seniors alike, embracing these top trends in senior portraits means creating images that are not only visually stunning but also rich in meaning and personal significance. Encouraging seniors to express themselves, share their most cherished relationships, and explore the beauty of natural settings ensures that their senior portraits are a true reflection of who they are at this momentous point in their lives.

As the class of 2024 looks forward to the future, it’s evident that the trends shaping this year’s senior portraits are deeply rooted in personalization, authentic expression, and the connections that matter most. By incorporating these elements, we can craft portraits that not only stand the test of time but also serve as a vivid reminder of the joy, aspirations, and relationships that define the senior year experience.

Here’s why 👇🏻

Most people wait for the “perfect” moment—when they’ve lost a few pounds, changed their hair, or finally feel more confident. But here’s the truth: there will always be something you’re waiting on.

Your headshot isn’t about some future version of you—it’s about showing up confidently in the season you’re in today. Because this version of you? The one leading your team, meeting clients, building your business—that’s the version people want to connect with.

When your photo feels authentic and current, it builds instant trust. Outdated or staged images can actually do the opposite, making it harder for people to recognize the real you.

So don’t wait for “someday.” The right time to show up as your best self is always now.

📸 Ready for a refresh? Let’s create a headshot that feels true to you.

🚫 Let’s talk wardrobe no-nos for headshots.

I want you to look polished, confident, and distraction-free in your photos—and sometimes that means skipping certain outfit choices.

For men:

❌ No undershirts peeking through

❌ If you’re wearing a tie, make sure your shirt buttons all the way up

❌ If it doesn’t, we’re ditching the tie

For women:

❌ Skip the sleeveless tops—your arms will compete with your face for attention

✅ A sleeve (even short) helps keep the focus where it belongs—on YOU

The goal? A clean, intentional look that draws people in and keeps their attention right where it should be—your face.

📸 Save this before your session so you can show up ready and confident.

Let's talk... ⬇️

If your headshot isn’t working on your website, LinkedIn, or social media...

👉🏻 it’s probably not the image.

👉🏻 it’s the crop.

Yep, even the most beautiful photo can fall flat if it’s not framed for the platform it’s on.

Here are 3 common cropping mistakes I see all the time (and how to fix them):

1️⃣ Too Close – When there’s no breathing room, the image feels cramped and overly intense.

2️⃣ Too Far – If we can’t clearly see your face, we lose the connection instantly.

3️⃣ Wrong Shape for the Platform – That rectangle you uploaded to LinkedIn? It just became a circle... and cut off half your head.

✨ The fix? Intentional cropping before you upload—so your headshot looks polished, professional, and approachable everywhere.

Want a headshot that works across all platforms? Let’s create one that does just that.

Do you wear glasses all the time? Then they should absolutely be in your headshot.

Because here’s the thing—your headshot should look like you.

If you wear them only sometimes, it’s up to you. But if they’re part of your everyday look, don’t leave them out just because you’re worried about glare.

There are plenty of ways I can minimize reflection—and yes, I’ve got a few creative tricks up my sleeve if needed. 😉

Let’s keep your session real, honest, and true to how you actually show up in the world.
